  2. 1ST of August 2005 I started HMVF. 19th July 2008 we won the Bart Vanderveen award for outstanding contribution to the military vehicle movement. How did we go from zeros to heroes in under three years? It is simply – it is because of all of you, you have made HMVF what it is and I thank you for that. HMVF was and continues to be only as good as its members. For us to be recognised with such an award is truly moving. It isn’t easy to explain to you how a moment, an experience like being awarded this award from the ‘hobby’ takes you. It is all slightly surreal. I haven’t been in this hobby three years yet so it makes this acknowledgment, this nod approval of what we are doing even more profound. Before I go any further I must publically thank some people who have helped me get HMVF to this position. There is one guy who has been a massive supporter of me and that is my dear friend Kev Hollis from Dorset – he was the guy who made my family and I so welcome in this hobby and continues to be a great campaigner of HMVF and its vision…if everyone had this guys enthusiasm for the hobby then we would all benefit. We then have the corner stones of HMVF – the moderators. I am trying to find a different term to moderators, as the team, Snapper, Lee, Bodge and Mark do more than moderate, these guys helps shape and mould the direction of HMVF. It is important to understand that to be successful in anything you do you have to have a 1st class team around you, you need dependable people. You need a team that is focused and driven and when something needs to be done – it gets done. This is what we have with the HMVF team. It is a thankless task so I am pleased that this award is to them too as we wouldn’t be here without them. Now to Joris – that Dutch guy. I so wish he was there on Saturday as this guy is a true star and it is all of his hard work that we have what we have. His IT skills and dedication to HMVF has enabled me to put my visions together and I personally owe him so much. He has always sorted out the mess’s I have make with regards to the ‘back end’ of all three sites and he worked tirelessly when we lost the site some months ago. This is in between moving house, having a house built and having a baby, he is also one of the nicest guys I have ever spent time with and is a great example of a Dutchman. And to the ‘seniors’ Degsy, Richard Farrant and Clive Elliot who’s knowledge and input to HMVF really has to be publically acknowledged and applauded – these guys are awesome and have helped many members overcome the mechanically problems. They do it all for free and with good will. And to every single member who has contributed to HMVF, the reviews, reports, advice and the sharing of images and experiences, as I said at the beginning – this place is only as good as its members and that is reflected in us winning the award. So what is the future? To keep on doing exactly what we have been doing – because it works. Personally I have been banned from various places, slandered, sworn at and threaten with court action all because of HMVF. I hope now, by us winning this award has made it very clear that we have been doing was for the better and for the good of the movement. Yes lesson's to be learnt all round and I do seek criticism as that is the only way you can truly grow. However, I hope by us having this award may help you reflect on where you are and what part you are currently playing in this movement and now just may be a great time to sit down and rethink your strategy. Ask the hard questions, listen to your audience and customers and re adjust your mindsets and be prepared to make changes no matter how hard they are and lead from the front – a man who want change his mind – can’t change anything. The old need to accept the new and the new need to accept the old. There is far too much arrogance, rudeness and unprofessionalism out there and that needs to change as I have seen complacency destroy many business’s and clubs. Trying to undermine people who have enthusiam and drive really isn't the way to safe guard the future of our hobby - it is desperate for Innovators, entrepreneurs, visionaries and forward thinking people..... HMVF will continue to inspire and innovate and breathe some fresh air into this movement. Yes I am thinking about HMVF Radio where we will have podcasts, interviews, news etc etc and I have a meeting in September with regards to this. However, Mrs Beckett has been looking at me in her special way – the look that says stop spending our pension on HMVF…so I will have to wait and see what happens, a bunch of flowers should do the trick. I am over the moon with HMVF TV and we have 566 videos on there and they have been watched nearly ¼ million time – WOW! But I now need to turn my attention to HMVF Video Ads as this is truly a great concept and the feedback over the weekend at W&P was that it is exactly what is needed and would I pull my finger out and get it promoted. I will be asking for your help on that as we need to populate it with the ads that are currently on HMVF and with all future adverts. I also need to thanks my wife, Anne and my children as those poor so and so’s have had to sacrifice a lot with regards to HMVF and have been a massive support and have had to put up with me being grumpy when ‘problems’ arise with the site. To sum all of this up I am going to use the words from Snow Track Dave as it is perfect: “thanks for bringing us all together here and out there on the roads and rally fields of Britain , Ireland , Europe and across the world”. What else can I say? Except I am honoured to have you all as my friends - I love this hobby. May the journey continue…..

  4. That First Post. When posting for the first time, consider introducing yourself, preferably with your real first name. This helps people think you're a real person. If you have accidentally forgotten to fill in most of the details in your profile, like where you come from or what you do for a living, consider going back now and plugging a few gaps so that, when somebody clicks to see whom you are, they don't find a load of blanks. It is nice for all of us to know who we are talking to. http://www.hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?t=517 Please add the Introduction prefix from the drop down menu when making your post. 5. Forum RULES & GUIDELINES In joining this forum you are agree to abide by the rules as set out below or as amended as the management see fit. Accounts . When you join HMVF you will receive an account registered to your name and email address. You are limited to one personal account. The creation of multiple accounts with different user names is strictly forbidden and any such accounts will be terminated with no recourse to appeal, along with the originator's membership. It is just etiquette. If you're new, take the time to read a few threads first. Get a feel for the place; hang out a little; get an idea of what goes and what doesn't. There are countless conventions and unwritten rules on this, and every, forum, which you will only understand by observing others. If in doubt, keep quiet - it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. That First Post. When posting for the first time, please introduce yourself, preferably with your real first name. This helps people think you're a real person. Tell us a bit about yourself, which vehicles you own or intend owning or other interest. If you have accidentally forgotten to fill in most of the details in your profile, like where you come from or what you do for a living, consider going back now and plugging a few gaps so that, when somebody clicks to see whom you are, they don't find a load of blanks. It is nice for all of us to know who we are talking to. It is considered as rube to jump in & join a conversation without first making an introduction. If you do make a post without making an introduction first you will receive a reminder asking you to make one. Please do not make an Intorduction saying just " Hi I'm from wherever..." tell us a bit more about yourself, were you in the Services? what's your main interests etc. Members who choose not to post a FULL intro may find that they do not have full access to the forum. To protect members from Scammers posts in the classifieds section will be removed until an acceptable introduction has been made. No advertising allowed in the Introductions board. The board Is policed by voluntary Moderators who are experienced MV owners and in my opinion damn fine clever people in their respective fields. They are also busy people with lives, jobs and families who give freely of their precious time to enable this place to exist. They have a sense of humor, which coincidentally lives right alongside their sense of annoyance at people who post inappropriate things. These require the moderators to regularly trawl through the all posts to edit out these posts and delete offending material and gets very tedious very quickly. If you post inappropriately, you will not be on their Christmas card list and may well find your ability to log into the HMVF next time mysteriously difficult. Our mods are human and appreciate a little respect and remember, their word is final and I will, always, stand behind any of their decisions. Be Circumspect This forum is growing into a wonderful and one of the most widely read MV forums and is read by a huge number of people in many different countries. So please beware of what you post may offend people form different parts of the world. Any racist or sexist remarks will be removed without notice & a warning will be issued to the poster The Moderators are in Charge of the smooth running of the Forum. No member shall question the action of the Moderating/Admin Team in an open post on the forum, if the thread/post moderation concerns yourself directly please take it to PM where we will discuss it. Any such posts questioning our actions on the forum will be deleted without notice. Threads are moderated for the benefit & smooth running on the Forum & its members, all moderation is discussed by the moderating team in deciding what action to take. We will not discuss any members business with any other member. Any member that removes a large number of posts/threads for no legitimate reason may find their account restricted or removed. The HMVF Team are very approachable, if you have a problem with any part of the forum please contact us & we will do our best to get things sorted. Moderation of Threads/Posts FAQ... My Thread/Post has disappeared??? If you become aware that one of your threads/posts is missing this is probably because it as been removed by one of the Moderators/Admin. Threads/Post are not deleted, they are moved to a holding folder where the reason for the removal is discussed by the staff of HMVF,one of three things then happen: The thread/post: Remains removed, Is restored to the Forum or Restored to the forum but Edited. Some of the text/photos are missing from my post??? In some circumstances we may just edit a section of post, if this is the case the section of removed text will be replaced in red with the words Mod Edit Photos may be removed because they are not suitable for the forum or are too large for the page. Why was my Thread/Post Moderated??? There could be a number of reason for this, Political or Religious comments, Flaming, Foul language etc. The thread may also of been reported to the Moderating team by another Member for us to look at, in this case we will never disclose the identity of that member. In most cases we will notify you ASAP that Thread/Post is being moderated, We do not allow the same post to be posted on multiple boards. Disagreements. These will inevitably occur (this is a discussion forum after all, which relies on differences of opinion to exist), and when they do we ask you to maintain your dignity. You are entitled to express any opinions you choose, but you will be required to defend them in rational debate should we disagree. 'It's just my opinion' is not a valid excuse for being wrong. If you think something you are about to post might risk inadvertently offending another member and you want to tone it down a little, try using one of the smilies to introduce a grin or a wink into your post. Politics,Religion & Sports. Religion & sports have no relevance to this forum so please refrain from posting subjects on this matter Politics creeps into every day life and the movement has, like all others its fair share of politics - but it isn't tolerated here on HMVF. Yes, sometimes we can all have a bad hair day but please keep it off the forum. One of the reasons that HMVF is so successful is because it is politics free, it is a safe place to spend some time and it shows respect to all fellow members if we keep politics off the forum. Open debate is good and healthy and is encouraged but the moderating team, without question will take the appropriate action to keep HMVF smooth and 'trouble' free. Again, if you think something you are about to post might risk inadvertently offending another member, then don't post it. E-Petitions. To save straying into Politics, E-Petitions may be locked or deleted where we see fit. VOSA/DVLA/DfT & other Government Departments & the Emergency Services Any derogatory/inflammatory remarks made about any of the above or their staff will be removed without notice if we feel that it brings HMVF in to disrepute. Current/Recent Conflicts. Although we have the greatest respect for all members or the Armed Forces we have a policy of not discussing recent or current conflicts so as not to bring Politics on to the forum. No Recent Combat Photos/Film Footage to be posted please. Classifieds & Advertising This Board is reserved for Private Military related adverts only. Adverts are free but if your item sells then please consider using the Donate Button on the front page. Members that start listing large amounts of items may be considered as a commercial seller & have their posts removed/restricted & a fee may be payable to continue to advertise. When posting adverts please post a full description of your advert with posts, not just a link to other websites where your advert maybe posted. Commercial advertising is by prior arrangement only. Any advert not adhering to these rules will be removed. No advertising allowed in the Introductions board. Members with a post count score less than 5 will not be allowed to post any form of classified adverting or wants, this includes contacting members via PM to sell an item. Post will be deleted without notice if these rules are not followed or a member will be banned if they carry on breaking these rules. Flaming, Offensive Remarks & Foul Language: Aggressive posts, defamatory/libelous/offensive-inflammatory remarks, foul language, or harassment of other members will not be accepted (otherwise known as flaming). As these forums are often viewed both at home and in workplaces, family language is encouraged. Please remember this is an open forum & non members can read all the material contained in it, please remember that Women & Children read the forum. Make sense. The only things that matter on this forum are your words and they're the only way you have of gaining respect from this community. Use them wisely. While you won't find yourself gagged for mis-spelling, the forum does include a built in spell checker, we do urge you to take time over your posts so that we can read them. Please do not type entirely in CAPITALS. Due to Section 36 of the VCR Act 2006 (Manufacture, import and sale of Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIF's)) coming in to force on 1st October 2007 you will no longer be able the advertise or discuss manufacture of RIF's on HMVF. 6. This site was born out of necessity. I was born and bred in a Hampshire village called Wickham and as with any southern village in Hampshire it is steeped in WW2 history as the village roads, fields and lanes where lined with vehicles, equipment and men waiting to embark for D-Day. Two villages away is Southwick House, the headquarters for the Supreme Allied Commander, General Eisenhower so I was pretty fortunate as a youngster and would imagine all of the vehicles driving around the lanes. I moved to Dorset when I was 18. Dorset was home to the US forces during the build up to D-Day and the county was fast becoming a huge armed camp, as men, vehicles, stores and ammunition moved to their marshalling areas to leave for Normandy from the Weymouth, Portland and Poole. We are still very fortunate to have many relics and traces left over from the war. Dorset is still littered with the archaeology of WW2, we have camps, Nissan huts, radar stations, we have Bovington Camp, home of the tank museum, we have RAF Tarrant Rushton, commanding officer Major John Howard left from here with his men to capture Pegasus Bridge, it also transported a third of the airborne forces for Operation Market Garden. So as you can see, I have been surrounded by WW2 history all my life. I have always wanted to have the privilege and to a certain degree, the responsibility of owning a WW2 vehicle. I wanted a GMC 353. Finally bought one this year. Now where do you go to find information, help, advice and encouragement with regards to your new ‘hobby’. Well of course you join the MVT and your regional group, which I duly did. The welcome was wonderful, I have never felt more at home, thank you guys. It soon became apparent to me that even though we all chat at our regional meetings and catch up with friends and fellow enthusiast during the show season, the movement is slightly fragmented. Being a member of an online forum I have experienced what a powerful tool forums are, I have seen this forum pull people together from all over the world. People exchange thoughts, ideas, tips and anything else that is involved in a hobby. This resource is incredible and the man who founded it should rightly proud of his vision, , it really has change a lot peoples lives. I thought that this is such a wonderful thing that I would like to do the same here but there is nothing so I joined a GMC forum in the US http://www.cckw.org/phpbb2/index.php this site has saved my life so many times. You post a question, it gets answered, ask about what colour to spray your vehicle and then a great debate is ensured! Ask for advice, it is answered. The above site and it’s members have inspired me to do the same for us, it helped me that much and I would like people to have the same help as I did, so many thanks to those guys for that. So, here it is, a site for all of us to talk, share, and debate anything and everything about the other loves in our lives – Historic Military Vehicles. It is my aim to get all of us talking and sharing our thoughts and ideas, what ever it takes to keep our living history, alive. This site is all of ours it will need your input for it to grow and for it to succeed, to reach its goals. It is my way of putting something back, please join me. Best wishes. Jack.
