  1. I would hardly say its the death knell of our hobby, i see no problem with vehicle safety. The consultation is mainly focused on "Commercial" operators, and all references to the types of vehicles they are proposing to look at is with Commercial operators in mind. I certainly agree that there should be consultation with the Federation of Historic Vehicles etc, there is no representation at all for "Private" owners operating old vehicles for no recompense. Maybe they should consider a Pre (Year) Weight ( x tons) Historic for no monetary gain class. That should sort out all the different silly classes that your vehicle may fall under.
  2. £10,000, Personally i would be patient, at the present time Hobsons are re-building them, but at some time in the future they will be deemed no longer fit for purpose or not economical to continue with, and then they will be sold off in their droves. Dont see too many other landys making big bucks except pinkies, i think that will be the case for "Wolf" variants, they arent all WMIK fits or "Snatch" majority are GS or FFR. And the potential £££ Collectors market for WMIK Land Rovers mean that non "original" copies will be punted about by those that bought the surplus WMIK kits and slapped it onto a GS. I'd save your pennies and wait for a Jackal, no faking those!
  3. That stuff is incredible, you could put it onto a steel nut/stud heat the steel to near melting point and lash salt water over it, and it wont let corrosion attack the metal and still provide lubrication to get the nut off. Ive had a tin of it for years, and only use it for high temperature applications.
  4. FV601 owns a Saladin that was pictured on the streets of Crater, Aden, so Terry, you are one of the few that has a vehicle and photographic evidence of its use in the Aden conflict.
  5. Just had my Master Cylinder come through the post earlier in the week, exactly the same as the new one in post #22 with the exception that i also had an alloy filler extension fibre washers and the rubber bellows complete with metal clips for the brake rod. No way its getting fitted to the pig at the moment though, blizzards and drifting snow ending play.
  6. Outpost was all filmed in Scotland, and i seem to recall the bunker was a wooden construct built within a church in glasgow, considering the budget it works well, like Dog Soldiers, cheesy yet entertaining. Do yourself a favour, dont bother with the recently released "Zombies of War" it looks like it was filmed at an MV show, and then had really bad aircraft special effects from a playstation game edited in, somebody should take the distributors to court for producing a totally misleading DVD cover! it is possibly the worst film i have seen.
  7. My favourite WW1 fighter, very purposeful looking machine, with a very nice Hispana Suiza V8 in the nose. Its a shame the idiot "Developer" pulled the rug out from under the trust that was going to buy the former Montrose airfield, then start pull down listed buildings, only to find he couldnt build because the ground was contaminated.
  8. There may have been inter aircraft chatter in Plain language, although i would of thought that it would be Radio silence all the way to prevent interception by the Germans, the communications back to Britain would of been very short, via morse, and coded at that.
  9. I seem to recall that the Soviet forces in the 80's had something in the order of 50,000 tanks, which didnt include the rest of the Warsaw pacts armoured forces such as East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland. How many tanks and troops did NATO expect to come over the border if the Cold war suddenly became hot? The joys of serving in the forces at that time! it seemed like alot of the exercises i was involved in were based on big armoured pushes in Germany, constant attacks by Russian aircraft, culminating in a "Man made Sunshine" fight, followed by a long period underground....surfacing to not alot of anything, if you hadnt previously died a horrific death.
  10. I seem to remember been told about Russian T72 tank drivers been selected for their shortness, as the tanks were low and cramped inside, i think it was supposed to be a morale booster, as in they were little people you could give a good pounding, however i was always more concerned at the vast numbers of T72's that would of been pouring over the borders!
  11. Proof that the Germans used T34 tanks against the Russians. This particular tank was retrieved from a lake in Russia, a local boy at the time remembers seeing tank tracks leading into the lake, at a time when the Russian army were fighting Germans in the locality, and bubbles and oil slicks kept on coming to the surface for a long time afterwards. It is thought this was purposely driven in and abandoned by the German crew, so that it wasnt captured by the enemy. I posted this elsewhere on the forum some time ago, i believe the tank was in such a good state of preservation that they eventually had the engine running and it now resides at a local museum.
  12. They have built 10 life sized models of the modified lancasters for the filming, and if Peter Jacksons love of all things vintage aviation is anything to go by, he will want them to be very accuate. Saving Private Ryan used CGI, I think used in the right context it works well. I dont think the original "The Dambusters" could be replicated, it is an iconic war movie, and very inspirational, but that was mainly because of the way it was portrayed and with that Dambusters March music. But it wasnt exactly accurate either, and frankly the latest researched information that has come to light, paints a very different, grittier and valiant effort. So hopefully the Kiwi director of british parenting, and with an obsession for vintage aviation will get it spot on.
  13. That green tag info is handy to know. I have heard various things about Silicone fluid, and i know from direct experience with a friend that raced cars using the stuff, that its not all that its cracked up to be, certainly it has a softer/spongier brake response, which was cured by going back to a standard brake fluid.
  14. Then you could do a short article and bung it into "Cives Corner" for the enjoyment of the great unwashed!
  15. Its camera shy, although i seem to recall the Registration as OI 1275 or 1250, it sounded like an engine size! For obvious reasons the owner doesnt want its location made public. Is it me or does the RUC vehicle look a little over restored, the paint work is so smooth and shiney it looks like a mirror on the armour, to the point were it looks a bit weird?
  16. Gibsons dogs name (Nigger) is causing them some problems apparently, a tv channel just cut out the name in the original film, but it left continuity problems in other parts of the film, and then they were inundated with requests why they done that, even the censorship board thought it daft. Apparently he also used to call it Nigsy so they might be going to re-write with that .
  17. Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame, is currently producing "Dambusters" a re-make of the original film and is to be historically accurate. There is more info under The Dambusters on Wikipedia. The dambuster wiki information also makes mention that Star Wars used the bombing scenes style from the film in the original Star wars film when they attack the Death Star. So for those who cant wait for the new film, here is something to make you laugh, the bits involving R2D2 are great, a very clever bit of editing!
  18. You see you might be onto something there, you wouldnt need planning permission as its mobile, it is also more of a talking point than anybody elses shed, so while they might have a chair a kettle and a radio, you can have all that with a big RR engine and armour as well, would also make a great Wendy house/climbing frame for the kids!
  19. This is exactly why a certain well known supplier is never going to get my business! I find part of the appeal of owning an old vehicle is the sense of satisfaction in obtaining something, at a very reasonable cost, i usually keep an eye out for stuff i "Need" i.e. i needed a set of spark plugs to replace the mixed bag i have in the Pig at present, and over a period of four months obtained enough plus spares for £30, i could of bought them at huge cost from the well known suppliers straight away......but where is the fun in that!
  20. It certainly looks exactly the same casting, the only difference is the extended filler tube on the one in the picture, on the Pig version there is an alloy plate on the top held down with six screws, and in the centre is a large threaded hole which accepts a union for a pipe, that leads up to the remote brake fluid reservoir next to the driver. This one looks the same, just with a different filler tube screwed into the threaded hole. I will let you know, after mucking around with the two not particularly nice ones i have, i have bought one of these off of e-bay, at worst it would probably entail swapping the plate over from the top of the master cylinder, and maybe moving the blanking plugs/unions around on the rear of the new unit to get it to fit.
  21. That looks in pretty good condition for something sat in a field, a fairly straightforward job to get it going, unless the armoured body is hiding a rotting chassis!
  22. Doug, does the packaging have a part No, FV number and the original supplying army units details, or is it in Lockheed packaging, the reason i ask is in your quote, highlighted, FV1600 series (i.e. Humber variants) have a very long push rod, which connects direct to the brake pedal, whatever you have sounds different. Can you post a picture of what you have, i may be interested if it does fit my pig, as i am looking to rebuild the majority of braking components in my vehicle.
  23. Looking at the pictures, just about everything has had alot of parts stripped off, there are even engines removed and stripped down, and the helicopters are just shells with engines and avionics stripped. Whoever stripped these of parts isnt long for this world, i can remember in the news, the helicopters flying through the fallout clouds, they must be super hot. Makes you wonder how many of these parts are in circulation.
  24. Gary is right, you can get your drive cloned, byte for byte perfect copy (Hash verified), you then run specialist forensic software such as Encase (Not cheap and requires an encryption key) which recognises file types and reconstructs them, its no use as an operating system, but you can retrieve stored data even deleted and part overwritten files and save them as required. Do this everyday as part of my job Forensically examining Mobile phones, its amazing what people think is long gone deleted that we recover! If anybody thinks this is just the job for recovering data, please contact somebody else, unlike universities, we have more than enough to be doing!
