  1. Probably CL spec (commercial logistic). Basic civvy spec but with some military mods like NATO hitch. I think they were common in TA units, the missing red cross adds to this, they are mostly TA units. Same happened with 110s, there were a load of CL spec truck cab 110s in TA units.
  2. Mine are as follows 73FL74 101 GS. Don't know full history but ended up with 201 Battery (Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Yeomanry) 100 Regt RA(V) as a light gun tractor. Met several from the unit who remember it, mainly as being unreliable  Had it for 6 years, bought off Kent Scouts who used uit as a paragliding tug  1984 110 2.5NA . Built as a military demonstrator and registered to Land Rover. Looks civvy, but left factory bronze green/limestone & soft top, 12/24V and clansman set up, roll bar, military chassis no but no jerry can lockers. Then bought by BAe as a Rapier development vehicle, later used as a yard tug. Shows four changes of owner in that time from company name changes! 1 Tonne rapier reload trailer. No details, bought it 2 months ago, not collected it yet! Usually tow the group's Rapier Blindfire tracker trailer on loan from BAe.
  3. Pretty much everything is same as civvy mechanically if its a 12V. Haynes comic is ok on Land Rover. You can download the official workshop manual off the web but can't remember where. If there is anything specifically militay you need to know ask away on the emlra forum.
  4. Depends on the show plus we are a loose knit group with no dress code. I usually wear DPM but make more effort at pure military shows over say a steam rally. At the BOAR rally in Belgium it is compulsory to wear green stuff, you are underdressed in the bar if you don't! DPM also hides burger sauce and red wine stains v effectively!
  5. Just seen your post over there, didn't realise it was Peter's Carawagon you bought. You will certainly get a warm welcome.
  6. You will find most Land Rover owners on here lurk there as well. Mention of a Carawagon will have some even drooling and foaming at the mouth!
  7. Cost is a big issue for us as well with a TM and rake of 101s to fuel up, now joined by a Scania beavertail to transport the Sabre which is why we don't wander too far from the SE. We are thinking of asking the commercially organised shows we attend for a contribution to the cost of putting on our display.
  8. Combat Engineer Tractor and a Scammell Crusader with plant trailer to carry it. Ultimate would be a Challenger ARRV and to buy Richard a couple of beers to shift it on his Oshkosh.
  9. Same goes for postwar, Reos etc are common and cheapish, big British stuff is rare either cos the cabs have rotted away, are very thirsty or popular with earthmoving contractors. There is also an image problem, most public seem to go oooh at American gear but not appreciate homegrown trucks. Even I've got spilt views, think Scammell Crusaders and Foden FH70 limbers are v sexy (sad I know! positively drool over the Foden drops IMMLC fleet) but appreciate the good looks of all the Oshkosh trucks and puposeful looks of the MANs (in other words the British army's new fleet). Wandering off thread into a rant on the state of the British truck industry here I think.
  10. Besides our own mob, I am a member of the Ex Military Land Rover Association and 101 Forward Control Club and Register, both very long winded names usually shortened to EMLRA and 101FCCR.
  11. One of our group has got a Sabre now and is looking into getting us all tested at the same time. Apparantly all you need is a mini digger (don't think I can even get through the drivers hatch on the Sabre!). If I hear anything before you Graham, I'll post it.
  12. Volunteer to do the washing up, doing a sink full of dirty dishes gets my hands clean. Mind you, I've no choice being single!
  13. Yes, V8 24V is a fully shielded system with a dustbin sized generator same as lightweight. What you are proposing dual voltage is how 90/110 and wolfs are powered, 12V alternator for vehicle systems, 24V generator for radios. A well tuned V8 is great, mine runs on a pair of rebuilt SUs and luminition ignition. Goes like stink (well relatively for a 101!)
  14. Hi Nat The 2.5 petrol sounds like a good option, basically the same engine so eveything should transfer accross. RPI did have some ex MOD rcon 24V V8s but wanted about £900 for them. Not sure what differences there are over civvy other than the water pump and some bracketry. Mines a 12V so can't tell you how the generator is mounted other than its high up on the right.
  15. Hi Nat, another name from elsewhere. Glad you kept the 24V system, good for wading!! People are too afraid of them for no good reason, plenty of advice and spares out there. Apologies for slagging your Weber carb off on the other thread though, well it is late and the Glenfiddich is flowing. Should get out of this late night posting habit.
  16. No, don't go for the Weber, they are crap in this application. They strangle what little top end there is, run lean and can be prone to vapour lock. The only reason they can be described as an economy carb is that anything is better than a knackered Zenith. A recon Zenith carb is the same price as a Weber if you look around. Your carb should be a Zenith 36IV, are you sure yours is a Solex (same company anyway I think) When you strip a Zenith/Solex it's worth rubbing the upper and lower bodies on a sheet of wet'n'dry fixed to a piece of glass. This will remove any distortion and hopefully stop any air leaks. There is also a redundant drilling in the throttle body which causes problems but I'm not sure what one, do a google on Zenith 36IV and you should find some good advice. There is one adjustment on the Zenith, same as the Weber, which is the idle mixture screw. Crank up the idle speed a bit, then screw the mixture in until engine starts to falter. Screw it back out counting the turns until it falters again, screw back in halfway and it's set. One other thought, is there slop in the throttle spindle on the carb? This will also cause rough running as air gets sucked in this way. If you have slop with a new spindle, the carb is scrap although I have got away with taking the slack up by using a piece of feeler gauge. Of course if you want real reliability and better performance, fit an SU carb and manifold from Automotive Components. Mucho Dinero though.
  17. Cheers Richard, I'll tell him its easy!! There was one at Military Oddysey with matching Foden Limber but they were placed in a really soggy spot so didn't deploy it.
  18. Wouldn't surprise me if he tried, not sure that ebay will accept it though.
  19. Jack, it's a sealed bid tender auction, you don't attend and have no idea what prices are going to be like. Also found out today that he put in a low bid on a Sabre for spares, won that as well! Don't know about displaying the FH70, had a look at one at Military Oddysey and thought no thanks, setting it up looks like a recipe for losing limbs let alone fingers! We may do I suppose unless anyone wants a cheap FH70.
  20. Just had share this one, a mate put in bids in Withams latest tender sale, mostly for useful stuff like a fork lift truck for his yard, some clansman spares etc. Just to fill up the form a bit he put in what he thought was a silly bid on a FH70 155mm gun. Guess what he won, yes the FH70!!! Now panicking where he's going to put it as his yard is full. He has too much money anyway having bought a Sabre CVR(T) recently and then had to spend £6k on a beavertail truck to carry it so getting it from Withams won't be a problem! All he needs now is the Foden limber.
  21. Thanks for the welcome. "Pull up a sandbag and a cheque book, your going to need one if you own an mv" You forgot to mention the heavily dented credit cards as well Shane. Need to do overtime all winter to pay for the summer!! A look at our website will tell you most of what we are about, but we started out as Land Rover owners who drifted into the military scene and have since got completely out of hand. The first thing to start things really snowballing was being loaned the Rapier kit by BAe and since acquiring a lot more. As displays got bigger and more kit obtained, it no longer all fitted in a 101 and trailer (plus I was getting fed up with hauling it!) so a Bedford TM 8 tonner with crane was bought at auction by another member. This carries a comms box (actually a BT van body!!) that is now filled to capacity with cam nets, tents all sorts of other stuff. We do a lot of steam rallies around the SE (they have the best beer tents) but the main show is Military Oddyssey. We also do an annual trip to Belgium to the BOAR event at Arendonk. We don't bother with War and Peace though. The latest vehicle to join us is a CVR(T) Sabre which should be at next years shows. If everyone turns up we have 12 vehicles and a tent city but we can fill a large area with just 4 vehicles and missile kit. We refuse to do straight line parking and got known as the Awkward Squad at an early stage because of it. Now I've bored you all and it's nearly home time, I'm off.
  22. Hi Found this site in CMV today, looks good. Already lurk around other mostly Land Rover forums and recognise a few names on here as well. Member of 101FCCR, EMLRA and an accidental founder member of Medway Military Vehicle Group. Main vehicle is a 101GS and I normally tow the group's Blindfire Rapier tracker trailer. Also have an early Land Rover 110 which was a factory military demonstrator.
