OK, I want a K9 now, and I mean right now. It was bad enough missing my one watching this restoration, now it is finished it made it worse! Excellent result and one you can be proud of.

Keep the pictures flooding in: Especially the boring ones of welding. They all make me miss my old K9 even more.

Diesel storage area.

There are very clear documents on vehicle marking. In none of the official publications have I ever seen a reference to white wheel nuts. Red for danger on split rims only. In all official publications the wheel nuts have been body colour.

Wheel nuts should only ever be the main body colour. The hub nuts can be painted red if that is what you like?

Merlin's light fuel sampler?

My entire family collects crap. Between us there are over 20 projects on the go and four or five garages full of randomly acquired parts, most of which is not for the projects we have! I die, the family may not even notice, they will just keep hoarding over my body.

Certainly in aviation the fuel must have samples taken every day. The samples get stored for years. As this is a tube I figured it must be for inserting into the ground tanks. As the tube is held up from contact with the floor by the feet it will allow a sample to be taken from the bottom of the tank. This would allow testing for water (fuel floats on water) and other contaminants such as sugar, rats, rust etc. That was my answer anyway.

Yes Clive, but I was allowing others to suggest it is to allow the low level testing of fuel for water contamination before this reply.

Copper for antispark. Long and thin with two handles near the top. Legs at the base. Is it an inspection tool for looking through fuel at the base of a tank?

My father has around 50 years of collecting stuff to sort through should he die. No idea what a lot of it is and there are a vast number of projects around in storage. My biggest headache will be sorting out storage costs whilst it is all gone through. I really hope he lives for longer than I do!

Seeing this makes me want my old K9 back. I think it is time to rethink my collection. Excellent clean up going on there and good to see.

We are gearing for Shoreham airshow still. 1 1/2 hour drive from Chelmsford.

There are plenty of fields around the racecourse that can be rented short term. Google and a web search show many local properties are for sale. I rather like the castle for sale on the racecourse grounds for just 3 million. Buying that would help sort my shower problems out for my family at the show. The owned land may be less than the hopfarm site, bit much of the hopfarm was not used by w&p. It looks to me like the grounds are the same size.

Post war marking were all covered in depth by Clive Elliot. Do a search for his thread on Post War Military Markings in Clive's Corner. You will find the 1952 marking most helpful. Red squares on both doors can be mis-leading. Sometimes on exercises opposing sides were marked with red or blue squares on the doors. As the cold war ended the red became orange as the Russians got upset! Start with the damaged front wing. Use some wet and dry and slowly work back down through the layers to see what you can find? As you look at the vehicle from the front the left tended to have arm of service (Only good to indicate type of unit such as REME, RA, RAOC etc) and the right wing tended to have the unit markings which is what you really need to find. Take your time with rubbing down and take regular photos as it is all too easy to rub through stuff you wanted to keep/ though irrelevant. First thoughts for the hole int he rear are a wheel well like in my mum's 80 inch series 1.

I suspect that if those involved get caught by the authorities that they will be given substantial protection against retribution. One of the last cases like this that involved in someone getting caught led to the person involved fearing for his life. All very expensive for us to pay for.

Ark Royal is still there looking resplendent before her one way ticket to Turkey. There are two frigates being sorted for the same fate. Not sure if they will travel together when they go? As it is the school holidays I took my sons to the dockyard today to see stuff before it all goes to scrap. If they just sank Ark Royal in the solent then some future prince could get involved in her raising in future years and she could be 'saved' for the nation.
