  1. My son in law and daughter have a series 3 24v ffr with a cracked block. 2 years ago we ground out a groove in the waterway behind the starter and filled it with liquid metal and all was well until now it is leaking again. I have a early series 2 engine is the block interchangeable if I was to strip both engines and build one from the two. I know all ancillary equipment will have to be from the series 3. if is not possible then anyone need a series 2 engine and gearbox.
Hi, I have an engine block in good condition, 3 bearing, cam shaft in it, stripped bare, bores greased up, £100 Sheffield area, Nigel.
  2. Doug,

If the flywheel has cracks in it, it will also have hard spots and will not clean up at all well. I would change the flywheel, probably cheaper than trying to get it machined. They must be readily available.

    cheers Richard

The plastic clips are cheap and nasty, its a gearbox removal to fit them, a common fix is to weld a metal strip that holds the clutch ball in place. As even removing the clutch slave cylinder can break the plastic clip. A 16p clip and your off the road.

  3. Nigel do you have the Servicing Schedule? There are things to bear in mind, for instance do not put gear oil in the gear box, use engine oil SAE30. So hopefully it will be at the shows this coming season, where are you located or more to the point which shows will you take it to? I am in S.Wales if you within range I can show you the pitfalls & things to look out for on my FV1609.

PM me your email & I can send the limited info I have on yours.

I have the User Handbook and EMERs, im near Sheffield, will do Yorkshire war time and if possible War time in the Vale which is more your territory. I knew you were moving but hadn't realised you went to Wales. Hope all is well there. Thank you Clive, will pm you. Nigel.

  4. Well done on getting that chassis plate picture, it is difficult getting the camera & your head in there.

The belly plate is from a Pig rather than a Hornet. The exhaust pipe on a Hornet exits in front of the O/S front wheel & the cylindrical silencer was under the front of the engine. So it needed a rather bulged belly plate to accommodate the silencer.

I knew that there must have been something on the plate on the right corner. I thought it was my bad eyesight rather than a word being chiselled out. A normal Pig chassis plate has just on the top line 'TRUCK 1 TON ARMOURED' there is no other word. The spacing showed that there was another word up there.

Despite what they have tried to remove the Hornet identity is there in the Asset Code 310125.01.777 that for a FV1611 was 310118.01.777 both of these variants were based on the FV1601 which was 311135.01.777

All Hornets were based on FV1601 & not as some drivel in books & the internet say they were modified Pigs.

So I think your Hornet was re-bodied from a knackered Pig & a replacement engine fitted from 27 BK 08. This Pig was FFR & had the 2-speed generator which would explain why yours has one. Pigs Mk 2 were not all 2-speed generators there are some single speed ones.

But your Hornet history is not just evidenced from the record card & Chilwell register but you have that Asset Code 310125.01.777 evidence on the plate, nobody thought to hide!

Thank you Clive, its wonderful to have a piece of history, I have the brake cylinders to change, a general service and front hydraulic hatches to get working. Then run my Pig, want to show it and enjoy driving it. Is it possible to send me a copy of the record card, can that be done with a pm. Thank you once again Nigel.

  5. thumbnail_IMG_20161226_102528.jpg

Thank you that looks all standard Mk 2 & fits in with the Asset Code on the bonnet 1760-2501, other than an ammeter/voltmeter on the dash. Such a meter was not part of the Hornet set up.

The engine is not original it should be 7858. What you have I think is 8528 & that was originally fitted to 27 BK 08. That was a Mk 2 & is no surprise as there were often engine swaps in NI.

Any chance of getting a bit more of a view of the right side of the chassis plate please? It would be interesting if it says "Launcher" & if it displays the FV code. Not easy taking photos up in there I know!

A bit easier, have you a view of the front belly plate as they were different.

The chassis plate does not show a FV number, but what is interesting, at the top right hand corner, the designation Launcher has been chiselled out.

  6. Nigel 21 BK 96 was like all 1 Ton Humbers originally soft skinned & in this case a FV1601 delivered to 21st B Vehicle Depot Feltham on 11/10/54, Contract No. 6/V/27455, Receipt Voucher No. FTM/R/3245, Engine No. 7858

Unlike the Pigs that started to be made in 1959 yours was not made into Pig.

However in the period 1962-3 it was made into a Hornet FV1620 & was struck off census on 22/10/70

On a date unknown it was recovered by 18 Command Workshops, then went to CVD Hilton on 6/12/73, then VSD NI 12/2/74, then HQ APC Admin Staff NI 20/3/74, then struck off census at disposal sales 6/9/92

It was converted (body transplant) to a Pig & up-armoured in Op Bracelet that ran from Sept 1972 to June 1973. So when it arrived at Hilton it was already converted presumably at Bovington.

It would be interesting to see if it still has the same engine which would have been a B60 Mk 5F not a 5A as originally. It is widely held by various authors, no doubt influenced by the EMERs, that state 5A. But they are wrong you should still see the engine plate showing 5A but it should be over-stamped as 5F. This indicated that the original Generator No. 1 with a measly 12A output was replaced by the Generator No.9 which was a 100A alternator.

I would be interested to see if much in the way of internal fittings remain as a lot of stuff had to be jammed around dash area & whether the alternator is still there. If it was it would explain why HQ Admin bagged it.

Why take the body off an existing Pig? Why not get that going? Well of the 200 Pigs recovered for Op Bracelet many were in a poor state & Op Marble to assess the time taken to make them serviceable showed that Pigs were taking twice as long than anticipated & many had not had scheduled upgrades that were laid down in the EMERs. So automitively a Hornet used by an elite Airborne unit (Para Sqn RAC) only a few years before would be in a better state than the average Pig recovered from a scrapyard. Reading the SITREPs of the time there was a desperate shortage of Pigs & parts that could be cannibalised. With the wheel stations failures alone meaning at any one time 80 Pigs were out of commission needing these rebuilt.

So a very intriguing history that must be unique.

Thank you Clive, I have found in some paperwork that my Humber was a missile platform, since you high lighted it. I will get photos when I have daylight to record them. Nigel.
  7. Hi Clive, can you explain on its history a little please. I will sort some pictures for you, for as I know Wheatcroft bought 4 from the ministry and I have owned it ever since, 07/08/93. Its totally untouched inside and out, apart from I had to cut the left hand rear aerial mount off to get past my house. Nigel.

  8. I have a Humber Pig mk2 up armoured, not been touched for 20 years, it still has the lot number and blue cross painted on the front, registration 21BK96. I am the first owner after the Wheatcroft Collection purchased 4 from the Ministry. Engine running correctly now, brakes to do next. Nigel.

  9. Sean

I was at Penman today, have to say the aircraft hanger was a great piece of engineering, The charming Jennifer actually made a comment regarding the fluid affecting the seals which was a point made earlier

So what problems occur with synthetic dot 5, I was wondering, as a cure to stop cylinders seizing on a ferret ?

  10. Thanks Clive I will get some .

I found a new tool After trying bleeding the brakes with no fluid coming out I pushed fluid throgh the rear pipe with a plastic bottle filled with brake fluid and found the air leakon the front flexible hose. The problem was the female pipe was tightening onto the tub instead of the pipe flange as the nut was just to long by 1/16" .This I ground off and some progress was made but it is still being a to pain to get a good pedal.

More examination shows the master cylinder has a small leak off the secondary seal so I will replace

    Laurence

I have a Humber 1 ton, all brakes to do, then same on a ferret, so be 6 month project !

  11. Iam in the process of rebuilding a MK1 Sankey trailer (58BL33) as a Christmas present for my Champ. What are the hubs filled with EP140/EP90 or grease?

    Thanks

Fill bearings with a light general purpose grease, then squirt few shots of 90 grade oil with oil can, preload bearings and back off the nut, so bearings run smooth without any vertical movement of hub.

  12. The diagrams on Andy's site do not show a master switch, I never had a master switch on mine and a lot of people have added one.. It may have been an official mod. Richard Farrant may have any idea if there was a modification.

    Diana

No master switch on my ferret either. you will find the wiring diagram for the Humber 1 ton is very very similar.
  13. Nice pictures Tim you beat me to it I took similar ones but they are stuck in camera rather than on this phone. In fact the only pics I took were up the GW end and I thought that was all a very commendable display. Far more worthy than the tractor pulling stuff that goes on next our MV display :(

Hi Clive, hope your having a good time. Is it possible to post a picture if your Pig while at the show. Always good to see a fellow Humber owner enjoying him self. Best regards Nigel.

  14. Just to let you chaps know I have created an album of some snaps from this and previous years outings. I think you will have to go to my page to see them. David.

Great pictures. Got my 980 started last week, first time in over 3 years. Ran half hour with very little smoke. Had to manually put starter into mesh. Have found a broken wire and foot switch needs cleaning with sw not making contact. All exciting.

  15. Sorry, far too long ago when I last used one of these, now I think about it I think the groove is for clearance from the inner bearing cage to avoid damaging it, the purpose of the sleeve is to keep the hub square to the shaft as you slide it into the inner and outer seals. Once in place, the hub is supported and held in, then tool withdrawn and outer bearing fitted. I last had a Pig hub off about 25 years ago, so making my memory work now.

I would like a completed tool please, send me a pm so we can organise. Many thanks Peakrec.

  16. Just trying to delete this as I have put it in the wrong place under Blogs but can't see how.

If a Mod wants to do it or move it please carry on.

A good hydraulic specialist will have the parts, fittings and pipes so suit your requirements. a tee piece fitted where the oil warning light is will give the opening for your instrument and the warning light adaptor will verify the thread.

  17. Pre load the wheel bearings by feel to just take any play out, with the inner lock nut. Then back off 1 flat, fit the locking tab and outer locking nut. Bending to lock inner and outer nuts together. this will leave the bearings tight enough, to pass an mot and you wont be readjusting the week after when settled down !
