I will post up pics of the halley so far when i get the camera does anyone know of an ww1 period gear train and a suitible diff as im thinking on fabracating the gearbox casting rather than trying to fit any old gear box in. Iv got a drawing of the geartrain layout but no gear sizes or teath il try to post a diagram of the gearbox DAN & JEN
  4. Hi Mike sorry for not replying sooner thank you for that thats good of you i would deffinatly be interested in seeing the article thats brill . 7. Hi all iv been in the workshop all weekend working with my girlfriend painting and machining we have sorted out the spring (U) bolts and in the end decided to make new ones instead of trying to repair the old ones that are also wasted away. there made out of solid bar black round machined at each end then screwcut 5/8 whit put in the milling machine to machine one face on them to make them a (D) section then heated up and bent over well it tock longer than that to do but there done nowHoping to fit the springs one evening this week not far from having the back axle finished. DAN
  8. Hi iv looked at my tyres again well at the mo im working on the project every evening im hoping to have a rolling chassis by mid next year front axle and so on. Iv already started to do drawings to make the bumpiron pattern what is the usaul matieral to cast them out of or would cast iron or S G iron be sufficent for the castings. I hope to repair the rear axle U bolts and fit this weekend we,ll see anyway back to the tyres my front tyres have got hard spots on them and its gone abit crumbly but not right across the tyre this is on both tyres i guess were thay have been stood on for a long time. DAN
  9. Hi everyone i was worried that the tyres wernt good enouth due to the tyre in places have started to delaminate on the edges well the rust has pushed the edges up but have not cracked across the tyre before striping the chassis i used it as a trailer behind my unipower forister to carry 2" 6 gauge railway wagons about 1 ton each and moved 5 of them about 4 miles each at about 20mph and thay didnt come off then so hope is a good sign. I have tonight just fitted the last brake shoes so once iv finished the other rear wheel they can go back on the axle both springs are done just got to make four new axle clamps then springs can go on finish brake rods then thats all the back axle done WOOHOOO:yay:AND THEN THE REST OF THE 90% TO DO its not that bad realy DAN

  16. Hi thanks for that i realy apritiate that comment it helps im hoping to have the halley as a rolling chassis by mid next year fingers crossed. Iv just done the drawing of the dump irons to make a patern from i was going to fabracaite them but decided to get them cast and then i need to look at springs. Heres the rear springs that im now working on and one i did erlier.DAN
  17. Hi as you prob know it is very hard to a badly worn peace perfictly central definatly like this as it has also got pitting and wastage and the out side is also no help so we set the drum in the lathe rougthly and then set it on the inside face to a tool face held in the tool post and kept adusting until the score mark left by the cutting tool was equel all the way around. The drums face was not round due to high and low points from the brake shoes so it did take some time to set each one if the drum was round we could have used vernier calipers off the toolpost or off the top of the carriageway to get the part true that would have been nice but we did get there in the end. i have since finished bolting the drum to the wheel using the original bolts and nuts that wernt to bad it looks good and i am pleased just need to get tyres one day.
  18. Today we remachined the brake drum chain sprockets as thay were badly pitted after a long time sat in one place. Thay cleaned up nicely we took out about 0.0030 inch and that seem to do the trick also striped unseized and repainted one of the chain tenchioner and started the other one. DAN
  19. iv just done the two replacement engraved wheel plates from the not so good original one and re drilled the broken studs tapped and made new studs heres the picsDAN

  23. I am rebuilding a WD halley and whelst cleaning back the rear wheels i found this as the first top coat and then under that its what looks like a brown oxside i tryed to get a flake of the paint off to send to paint company but it turnd to powder still going to send it through to see if anything can be do with it. the white around the green is T cut to try and bring back the fresh colour. DAN
