  1. Thanks everyone. Interesting to give it a bit of history.

Unfortunately it has a significant amount of rust - especially to the interior. I’m currently thinking I may put some Oxalic acid in the interior and see to what extent it removes the rust but not the surviving paint. If it works well, I may dip the whole thing.

  2. Hi,

I’ve just acquired this incomplete MkII HSAT and I am currently mulling over how far to restore it. I wonder if anyone could help with the following questions:

    - Unlike a 1955 dated example in my collection, there are no visible date / maker marks stamped on the shell. (Assuming they’re not concealed by rust) Does that mean it *could* be of wartime manufacture?

    - Does anyone have any thoughts on what the markings stamped on the liner ring mean?

    - Likewise, the painted markings on the front?

    - What was the correct paint colour / texture of a WWII manufactured MkII HSAT? (I believe the colour became more green postwar)

    Thanks,

    Mark

  3. Danke. That’s an interesting picture. The BW Fallschirmjager seem to have used a variety of M38 style helmets before they settled on the M1 type FJ helmet.

My one is definitely dark blue and not olive. Dimensionally it is the same as a GSG9 helmet, but has recessed M38 style liner attachment bolt holes.

  4. I collect webbing and have sets of trials, olive green and DPM PLCE. However, whilst it closely resembles the medical kit carrier it seems to have some constructional differences and I don’t know what it is. You could try asking on the World Wide Web Collectors forum on Facebook.

  5. Sad news. I’ve bought many things from them over the years. Somewhere stashed away I have a collection of their old catalogues going back to the late 1980’s. They cover the ‘golden age’ of deact collecting in the UK and the choice and prices compared to now would make you weep.

  6. Revisiting the subject of the DPM cap... had a stroke of luck today at the Chatham militaria fair and picked up this excellent condition example for a mere fiver. Better still it’s an extra large 7 7/8 size and an early one with the brown lining and an early style DPM print. It just needs a very gentle wash and little reshaping.

  7. Of interest to owners of Section 58 obsolete calibre firearms. They are proposing to remove some calibres from the list and add others. Those removed will require an FAC:

The law concerned was modified last year by an SI so that it changed from ‘in the EU’ to ‘in the UK’. The UK left the EU in January and that is the current law.

However, in the real world it is a bit of a dead letter as regards private sales and is being widely ignored. I also don’t know whether it has been tested in court: as it stands, someone could spend six months in prison because they had sold an irreversibly gun because it had been irreversibly deactivated in the wrong irreversible way.

Not sure about the paint though. The crackle paint was originally on early British Sterlings too. It was removed and replaced with Suncorite in the course of their service life on most if not all weapons.

My understanding is that the British military guns always had the smooth Suncorite over phosphate finish. However, some commercial spare parts with the crackle finish (e.g. end caps) were later on obtained by the MoD from Sterling and ended up on military guns.

Are ex British guns few and far between?

I believe almost all of them were scrapped sadly.

This also explains why ex-British military Sterling SMGs are almost non-existent on the UK market. The ones you see for sale are commercial guns sold abroad in the past which have different markings and a different paint finish.
