  1. Fascinating stuff, I have the Daimler one for the Fox, the format is almost exactly the same as this Alvis one
  2. Thanks Laurence, sent you an email cheers Nick
  3. Thanks I’ll drop them a line, saw them on the Ferret site too.
  4. Thanks Chris, didn't think of plant companies, worth a punt, yes had a quote or two from low loaders at 540 + VAT Each way !!!
  5. Morning all, sidestepping the "Drive it there" debate, should I wish to move 5 tons of armoured toy around Southern England (Berkshire to where ever) I am rather naively investigating the costs, practicalities and methods of "hauling" . With a view to moving a Fox generally more South East temporarily around July/August. Not here for opinions on Kent in the summer :-) go ahead chaps any thoughts
  6. I’ll drop you a message Laurence. and yes the Fox sits proper still now with the propshafts clamped. Just got to remember which order to put all the tin back in now 😁👍🏻 Thanks
  7. Finally got the brakes done on the Fox, I honestly don’t know how I’d of managed without your pictures and description here, Very happy and most grateful cheers Nick
  8. Ive been using this post as a reference to do the brakes on my Fox, great stuff really really helped cheers Nick
  9. Id say Yes, but as you state, straight, not turning. The ground pressure is pretty low and the pads are flat. Engage in any turn over those and you will likely hook one up
  10. Think its just the way its pronounced Richard. any takers chaps ? Nick
  11. Chaps (and chappettes). My little baby sister, former WRAF is involved in some of the co-ordinating for this event. hundreds of ex and serving WRAFs are walking between camps and bases all over the UK. Naturally she has cornered her ex "pongo" brother (thats me) to round up some military vehicle support. Particularly the final leg a walk of a mile from Barton Marina to the National Memorial Arboretum on 25th October. This followed by a service and parade and flypast. So the appeal is to MV owners particularly any of the RAF ilk that might be able to attend on the 25th. Not sure which branch of the MVT covers the Staffir area. There are legs going on up and down the country and I will post a link or two incase anyone fancies showing up in yourvown areas. Currently planning to trek up to Stafford in me Jeep to meet up on ten 25th weather and serviceability pending. Be great to see some RAF blue wheels on the day. Some of the ladies are in their 90's including one who served on 617 sqn at the time of the Dams raid and have walked at least a few yards. Proceeds to RAFA and Macmillan Cancer. Be glad to hear from you via the board here or feel free to pm me. 12. Bit late on the reply but I rebuilt mine, followed similar advice as given above, plenty articles and pictures. My first big mechanical project. It's not that hard and quite satisfying to have done.
  13. There a photo on a wall/Office (think its the local rag) in Maidenhead of a Sherman being used to help in the floods, ai wonder if this is the same one. I have it on the puter at home and will dig it out when I get off work. Interesting clip that and here's another, more GPA's a DUKW and apparently a Sherman DD ironically swamped, obviously a big Army involvement, wonder what they could provide theses days ? http://www.britishpathe.com/video/floods-in-england-1/query/237520 and another but this time with splendid Pathe Commentary http://www.britishpathe.com/video/the-army-takes-over-flood-towns/query/Amphibious
  14. Cut to the chase, nearly two years on and off. Got a tip on sealing the ramp using silicon rubber. Off down to the local slipway, pace up and down a bit and.............:-D
  15. Trimmed wings were the norm where I was, I must admit I thought that was how it was supposed to be. Probably because all the lads did it so I just fell in with the crowd.
  16. Silly money ? Ahhhh bugger, at a certain period of my life I was digging through a box full of these about 20 years ago. Thinking they where a bit rubbish, they where being back loaded and nobody would of missed a few
  17. Yup , 24th August, Old and Bold and many who just want to support are doing the Fan Dance. I am revisiting my old role covering bases and writing up the comms/medical plan. With the numbers we now have the "couple of Jerrycans" at the turnaround point is fast becoming redundant. Need a bit more, TA and regs are being contacted but usual red tape applies. Of course being MVT myself And knowing how pro-active MV owners can be in supporting forces charities figured I would ask around re Water bowser.......any Minibus owners out there ? Obliged for the details chaps, I will get in touch with the bods soon.
  18. As the title says, bit of a request for a vehicle in the area in August ...specifically anyone with a water bowser :cheesy: all in a good cause. cheers Nick
  19. I had to do it, my gears where all chipped due to previous owner running it with what appears to of been mostly water with a thin layer of oil on top . As a ham fisted amateur, I did a lot of reading and forum searching. Jacks an blocks seemed to be order of the day... Top,tips after struggling over 3 ! Days. 1. Get an extra set of hands ! 2. All this talk of two jacks etc......get an extra set of hands 3. I used a strap passed through the hole in the tub where the cover and levers are, a winch if you got one to support it and wrap it round the box/transfer case. 4.Pre Plan to move the box/transfer case around once it's out ! a small wheeled trolley would be good. As it went for me I used a big sheet of plywood and dragged it out on that. It is a fair old lump mind. 5. Putting it back in...get an extra set of hands 6. The strap/winch combo worked really well, but what I ended up doing was supporting the weight and my extra set of hands actually pushed the Jeep back a bit to mate the box to the bell housing. 7. Don't forget the clutch rod arm that sits on the ball joint on the case side or, like me, you will get it all fixed on have a tea pat yourself on the back and then go to connect it up......My neighbour at the back reckons he could hear me swearing and he was in the bath at the time :nut:. Definetly a case of having done it twice now, it's not so imposing . Rebuilding the box was actually quite an interesting and simple affair, never having so much as looked inside a gearbox before, now I reckon I could strip and assemble it in 5 minutes ! (Maybe 10). Also interesting my box/transfer turned out to be a mash up of Willys, Hotchkiss and F scripted bits. good luck keep us posted Nick
  20. Of course Suez, Im pretty sure they used LVT 3's rather than the wartime 2 and 4. I also think....they might of been borrowed off the French for the duration ? The French used the 3 and 4 at suez including the 4 with a Bofors mounted on it ! The LVT3 saw action at Okinawa and in Korea but Im not sure they where ever directly used by the Brits ?
  21. Well as a "Frontline" bit of kit only a couple of years and I think they where used by the Royal Marines rather than the Army post war. There was at least one in Army hands and still running in the Early 60's according to an ex REME bod I know. Though not in very good nick. They only had an expected running life of a few hundred hours if I remember right.
  22. I don't know that Jealous sums it up, but as a died in the wool Amphibious and LVT fan, I surely am ! Good for you Tokarev what an opportunity and thanks for sharing.....mostly :-D
  23. According to the BBC news a Landy fully kitted up with radios was nicked from SPTA ! Wonder who signed for it :wow: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-22180438 Oh that and another 200K's worth of kit !
  24. Might not be the place for medical advice, but as the day job is cabbying about in a big yellow NHS taxi . If you've got lurgee that can proper mess up your blood pressure medications effectiveness. We see it a lot. Regardless of remote medical diagnosis, get yerself and family better bonny lad, we need to see your Jeep finished !
  25. Took me eyes off your thread for a while Steve, inspirational as always ! Nick
