  1. Hi Paul We were considering going but when I spoke to the organisers they seemed to be very disorganised. They were very vague about camping arrangements and when I mentioned a contribution to fuel costs (they will be getting a grant for the event) I got a very negative reaction although said afterwards that they would consider it and get back to me,I'm still waiting. Cheers Degsy
  2. Hi Jack If your vehicle is marked to represent a specific unit then I think it would look odd unless you were to wear the correct uniform for that unit. The GMC was used by all the Allied nations at some time, so you have a huge choice. I know of some people who use magnetic signage and so can chang the unit markings at will. Cheers Degsy
  3. Hi Jack Try Martin at Allied Forces, he usually has good paint in stock, uses it on his own vehicles, need I say more. Cheers Degsy

    Driving license..

Hi Shane As long as the RL was made before 1st Jan 1960 you can drive it on a normal car licence, when Richard mentions a C1 licence I think he might be confusing it with a C+E licence.C1 covers vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg with a trailer up to 750kg,C+E covers any vehicle over 3500kg with a trailer over 750kg and equates to what used to be known as a class 1 licence. Since a halftrack is steered by its front wheels and not by its tracks I don't believe you would need a H licence for it. Regards Degsy

    Driving license..

Hi Shane You can drive a large goods vehicle manufactured before 1st January 1960 on a full category B licence provided the vehicle is unladen and any trailer being towed is unladen. I am not sure about a halftrack, the definition for the licence used to specify "a vehicle steered by it's tracks" but this no longer seems to be the case, however I am sure some body will come up with an answer on this one. Cheers Degsy
  6. I assume you disconnected the breather pipe ,when you reconnected it did you use ptfe tape on the joints? If not it will not run properly. Regards Degsy
  7. Hi Jack It's not that co-driver you need to worry about it's the 3 in the back with the big teeth! Cheers Degsy

    Rare GMC?

Hi Jack Wheels and Tracks issue 22 carries a good article on the airborne GMC's, the necessary parts were produced as kits for either factory or field installation on LWB cargo and cargo/dump and SWB cargo trucks. They all started life as canvas cabs but it is known that some were fitted to hard cabs, it is believed that this was done post war during NATO country rebuilds.Total production is quoted as 3880 353A2 cargo,2497 353B2 cargo with with winch and 475 353H1 cargo/dump with winch.Apparently the 352 is not listed anywhere but it is known that over 400 were produced. It appears that comparatively few have survived and they are considered to be fairly rare.
  18. Hi Bob Check that the top of the carb or body has not distorted,it does happen with Solex, but they do have a tendency to run rich,is it black smoking? I assume you have checked/changed points, condenser, plugs, plug leads and HT lead and also distributor cap and carbon brush and spring. A possibility is that the springs on the auto advance in the bottom of the distibutor have weakened, this would cause the symptoms you are getting. Let me know Cheers Degsy
  19. Hi Bob I will have another think about it ,am away early tomorrow for the weekend so will get back to you next week. Cheers Degsy
  20. Hi Berni Nice to hear you are going for a CCKW, we certainly have no regrets in running one,as long as you can fund the fuel bill and find the right truck Iam sure you will be happy with one.Do you want a 352 or 353? Cheers Degsy
  21. It sounds as if it is taking air,the usual reason with a Solex carb is caused by the small o-ring on the venturi.Over time this deteriorates and hardens, the seal holds until it is disturbed but then will not re-seal when carb is reassembled.
  22. Hi Jack As if I haven't got enough to do. But seriously I agree it is a huge subject and very important and interesting. Regards Degs
  23. Hey Jack I thought I answered most of these questions on the CCKW site, A lot if not all vehicles had their unit markings deleted for the D-Day landings as a security measure and because it was believed that Rommel was going to use captured vehicles to infiltrate behind Allied lines, this actually happened later at the start of what became known as the Battle of the Bulge.
  24. Without either fitting hardened valve seats or using an additive the valves will definitely batter their way through the cylinder head ,at higher revs they will just go through a bit quicker. As Jack knows we use Broquet pellets in both a jeep and a CCKW, not cheap but they are fit and forget and have a long history as they were originally designed by a B rit engineer for Merlin engines fitted in Hurricanes supplied to Russia.
