Thanks guys. Yes the transmission is interesting, but no more odd than a ferret I guess. The fact that no-one seems to have anything bad to say about them is good!!!!

I am thinking of a new MV, and very much like the look of a DAF YA126. Saw one in action at W&P the other year (with some crazy Dutch guys) and was very impressed.

What are people's opinions on these trucks? Are the practical (very subjective...relatively practical is probably a better phrase). Good and bad points. Spares availability?

Better to get one from Netherlands and import?

Looking at your photos...wouldn't stand a chance of mounting in an uparmoured one (with the extra protection over the bevel boxes)!!!

Hi robin, yes Beirut, Lebanon in 1984 with 16/5 QRL.

My particular ferret was handed over from QDG to QRL late 83 (I have been told) and change from green to light stone at that time.

i purchased it from an ex-member here who served in it, at that time. He has since, sadly passed away and would like to take it back to when he served as I had promised.

I have searched but cannot find on here....does anyone know the correct BS/RAL number for sand or stone colour for armoured vehicles in early 80's? I think its light stone, BS381c 361?

Not sure Mick, but if you could measure the length of section that goes into the engine bay I could see if that would be long enough for the Saracen, I imagine the drive dog would be similar

have you exposed all the gear change linkage? The linkage moves over when in higher gears maybe it's vibrating on some tin work?

When I saw the title I thought it was taking this whole MV thing a bit too far!

if I were dating a QL chassis my wife would definitely leave me!

Hopefully the arena is still in place!!!

Although I can understand this will prove less stressful on wiring looms, does it leave things more prone to dry joints? I am not sure if its the voltage or the current that "seems" to make 24V systems less prone to dodgy connections?

That said, using LEDs does seem a great choice.

I have not bought CMV for some time now, brief scans in Smiths have not inspired me to be honest, I used to love it.

I may be dim, but I thought there were two (easy) point at which to fill up the tracta/bevel boxes?

the filler/level plug on the inner tracta/ bevel (page 131 of the tech manual), and the filler/level plug on the outer tracta ( why bother trying to get to the filler plug at the top)? It also says in the tech manual to fill the hubs at the outer tracta filler, with the hub plug at 3 or 9 o'clock until it flows, replace plug and continue to fill until it flows from outer tracta filler/level plug.

i have always filled mine from the easiest position (ie the filler/level plugs), taking it slow and rechecking as you do tend to get a little bit of blow back and time to settle.

Cement mixer and soft sand polishes them up wipe with oily rag occasionally.

What is the easiest way to remove surface rust and restore a chain? I am referring to the recovery chains on the front of a ferret...they are smothered in rust.
