With regards to the cork seal inside the hub, I am currently trialing a rubber replacement seal. The cork seals leak something terrible. I have carefully cut a rubber strip the same dimension as the cork strip and fitted it today. I will assemble it back together tomorrow and see what happens. Surely rubber will do a better job than cork. Has anyone else done this?
  2. Even if it doesn't work it's cheap! The Cheaper the better - I saw some army clothing a few months back it said "made in China"...await the day when things are made in Russia (sorry got carried away) :-)

I see that they are employing an outside firm to do this, probably end up as a cock up ;)
  3. This maybe useful to anyone having slow running problems with a J60 engine.

We cleaned the carburettor and jets using compressed air, as well as carb cleaner, then we found a jet with a damaged thread on top of the venturi tube (solex 190). The jet would not seat properly.

After removing and cleaning the idle mixture screws, by chance I injected compressed air into the mixture screw holes only to find that there were air leaks between the 2 halves of the carburettor body accompanied by bubbling carb cleaner at the joint.

The carburettor is in two halves with a gasket between. The 5 socket head screws holding the 2 parts of the carburettor together were all loose, even after tightening there were still slight leaks, so presumably the carburetor joints were warped. The fix was a very thin coat of Hylomar.

These issues, including a dirty carburettor will have contributed to poor running, and the joint leak may never have been found were it not by chance. Worth a check if you cannot get the vehicle to idle properly.

  4. If you intend to go off road you know about the recovery exclusion clause with Cherished vehicles?

Any tips for driving a CVRT on sand?

Sand in the Gulf seemed to cause regular track shedding fro what I've read.

Presumably beach sand might be more forgiving than bone dry desert sand.

I think neutral and tight turns might be out, to avoid collecting too much sand between the wheels and spuds.

    Any other advice welcome!

  5. The Spartan has a lot going for it apart from cost, you can fit a GPMG, it's not a Rareden cannon, but it is a gun, easier to work on that a Scorpion, Scimitar or Sabre and has a lot more room.

You need to factor in not just the vehicle cost but fuel, insurance, recovery, spare parts, oil, filters as well as spares availability, and of course if you need a licence to drive a tracked vehicle the cost, if you do not already have one, of that. The other little issue often overlooked is of physically getting into and out of a CVRT, which for some people is impossible.

Yes i have looked on the 2 links regular but im looking for a tank with a gin not an armored vehicle like the spartan they are cool but its not what i told my son i would get for the years we have left. sabre or simitar is what im looking at
  6. The rear hubs of my Ferret, which I've overhauled, do not leak!

Tip - replace copper washers with dowty seals on the fillers and drain plugs. Ensure The Challis (spelling?) under the boot is smooth, if it's not it will soon wear out {damage} any new oil seal. The boot is not there to retain oil. but to keep out muck and dirt.

I would recommend flushing out the hub before fitting new seals.

There are 2 joints at the front of the hub, ensure they are not leaking. If they are use Hylomar but sparingly (If it gets into the threaded holes it causes problems, cured by using a thread tap). The hub front use 1936 pattern socket head (Allen) screws, they have a different head size to the later common 1960 pattern, hence if renewed the hole will have to be counter sunk which can be done using a bench drill.

With regards to the gearbox/transmission leaks. Make sure that you have not overfilled it with fluid. This can cause it to leak. As for the hubs. Strip them down, replace everything new, new seals, bearing, CV boots, hubs and repaint with military issue paint, fill with 80w/90, wait and watch it leak. Repeat this as many times as you want, and it will produce the same result. Trust me, Ive done everything, tried everything, it just leaks. Over time, you will convince yourself that it is leaking less.

    Just Bought an unissued MK 2 stove, the instructions say to use gasoline but another thread says to use Coleman's fuel;

Any suggestions as I don't want to wreck the thing

I do have a picture from another stove with the instructions, just trying to source a supplier who can make one to go on this stove

  9. I am going to have to Brush and roll the paint as I dont have the space to spray and dont want to upset the neighbors with over-spray. I have picked this section for this question as I am not very up on paints. Can I roll 2 pack, thought it was mostly for spraying?

You can roll/brush 2 pack etch, but I wouldn't roll or brush 2 pack epoxy. Etch is also liable to lift old paint, but 2 pack etch is the best to place directly over aluminium. It will adhere like nothing on earth. Avoid 1 pack.

    Diana

  10. 2 pack etch sprayed colour irrelevant and 2 pack epoxy primer(usually grey) sprayed, then whatever topcoat you need.

both the 2 pack etch and epoxy will/may lift old paint. So all the old paint needs removing. One coat of 2 pack epoxy should do, its tough stuff.

You will probably need epoxy thinners with the primer. NATO green goes well over grey.

Have decided to bite the bullet and repaint my CVR(T). Have had it for sake for a while now but not been to bothered if it went or not , the paint work is what you would expect from any vehicle that has been in service with lots of layers of paint and some flaking. Sadly the last person who came to look at her decided to start pulling the paint off in large lumps, not sure why anyone feels they have the right to pull off paint from a vehicle they dont own but less said about that.

What I need to know is what is the best base primmer to use before repaint. I know I will need to use a etch primmer but not sure if the colour is that important. I will be going to use NATO Green and black colour scheme , so was going to go for a grey primmer but have seen black is available. Which is the best to go for and approx how much would give me a descent base coat? Would have thought 2lt should do it. What is the best colour to use for the interior?

  11. The CVRT (J60) has electronic ignition (usually) which can be troublesome. Remove the speed limiter fuse cunningly fitted to an ignition coil blank cable outlet then see if it starts.

There is a complete ignition system on ebay at the moment.

    Hello!

Finally got round to getting down to the Spartan after a few months break. It was refusing to start last time I went to it and unsurprisingly hasn't fixed itself in the meantime.

So, I've got a temporary gravity fed fuel system putting clean fresh fuel into the carb. I've tried a different carb rebuild with new seals, so I'm pretty confident it's not a fuel issue.

When it did last run it was very rough, hard to start and refusing to rev. Anything but the slightest movement on the throttle linkage would cause the engine to stall.

Engine is is a rebuilt unit from Withams, with fresh spark plugs, relatively new batteries.

I'll take a spare spark plug when I next to down to check the size of the spark but I'm pretty sure it's got to be an ignition issue. I'm getting just over 11v of power to the coil, resistance across the LT terminals is 3.4ohms.

Any suggestions of things to check? I'm thinking either coil or HT leads are probably to blame..?

    Cheers.

  12. BCF is now illegal (except in aircraft and other permitted equipment). It was plumbed in to the engine compartment.

The best alternative is Foam, however some will argue not, though dry powder makes an awful mess. People who rally use foam (lifeline 2000)

    Hi chaps

Any idea when the early BCF fire extinguisher on the left hull side (I.E. on this Blues and Royals Scorpion from 1973) was replaced by the Swordsman type and was the early one plumbed into the engine compartment also?

  13. Under fine code CD30 which appears to me to be totally subjective.

............ now how can you demonstrate judicious behavior?.

    Pete

Simply by demonstrating you had taken every possible step, such as pulling in at every opportunity, checking to see if you had built up a queue of traffic behind you regularly, going at a maximum possible speed consistent with the speed restrictions on that particular piece of road and the vehicle you were driving, not traveling at a time when you may suspect or have reason to suspect that it was a busy time of day on that road.

I would suggest on an A road building up queue of 50 cars is asking for trouble, but then that is subjective!
