  1. To adjust the tracks, drive the vehicle onto hard solid ground. Engage reverse gear, release the steering lever for the track that is to be adjusted. Gently accelerate engine, as soon as the vehicle starts to turn, decelerate and reapply the steering lever to stop the sprocket being turned forward by the track resetting. The top of the track should have 1 to 1.5 inch sag between the guide rollers with no slack under the sprocket or rear (track adjusting) wheel. As has been pointed out to me, that's about the same as a fist-width between the top of the track and the hull. The track pins are 9/16 UNF thread, I'm not sure about the track pads but will check later. Andy
  2. Someone planning a riot then? :-) Andy
  3. I'd be happier if this related just to the sale of scrap to the dealer rather than all scrap transactions. Otherwise we'd lose all those nice bargains ... Andy
  4. I think this a real "Marmite" thing - I was taught always to lightly grease every thread unless it's in contact with compressed air. I've always greased my vehicle wheel nuts and never had a single moment's trouble in over thirty years of driving. If a nut comes undone because it's greased then it simply wasn't done up properly in the first place. Relying on a dry thread is hardly sound engineering! Andy
  5. If there's enough thread exposed you should be able to see if they're LH or RH thread. I'd second the point about a proper impact (6-point) socket which will grip the flats as well as the points. A conventional 12-point socket is far more likely to round them off. Then yes, a big bar and stand on it - never fails for 432 wheel nuts! Andy
  6. Has anyone ever come across any videos of Abbots firing? Ideally I'd like something of the turret interior showing the action of the loading trays and rammer, but even external footage would be nice. There must have been some training films back in the days? Andy
  7. What's the Army's equivalent of the Navy's "Came off in me hand, Chief"? :-) Andy
  8. Some form of battery cover or connector? Andy
  9. Never mind the track bashing, send us over some Macaroni Cheese! :-) Andy
  10. I love the land-locked corvette(?) with the MM38s on the stern ... Andy
  11. The problem is still there and I've just discovered it's a real pain when replying to PMs. The "Quick Reply" box is completely covered by an advert for Wooly Pullys ...:-( Andy
  12. Thanks Paul, I'll take a look. It's to DEF STAN 80-9 for those who keep asking! http://www.dstan.mod.uk/standards/defstans/80/009/00000300.pdf Andy
  13. How about moving the vehicle very slowly forwards or backwards under its own power whilst gently belting the edge of the track with a sledgehammer and block of wood? That should get the horns to drop back in place? Andy
  14. Was the track tension correct in the first place, Robin? I'm wondering what's cause and what's effect? Andy
  15. But a lump of metal that looks identical to a real firearm! Andy
  16. I've been on several visits in the past, but they now seem to be turning it into a holiday destination: http://www.amazingretreats.com/venues/spitbank-fort/ And it's No Man's Land Fort in Doctor Who! :-) Andy
  17. Have you had a chat with the library at Bovington? They certainly hold the workshop manual for the K60, which is a R-R publication rather than MOD, so you might get lucky. Andy
  18. The link to the video is on a thread here somewhere. I thought it might have been a 434 and a 432, but I may be mistaken ... Andy
  19. I didn't because I thought he might negotiate for "quantity". He usually only wants scrap value for things like that so I'd be surprised if he asked more than £30 each. If you tell me how many you want I'll ask if you like. The shipping will be a killer though, they must be around 40kg each? Andy
  20. I popped into Hirsts this afternoon and took a look at the wheels while I was there. Neil Hirst says they are indeed Chieftain wheels and he's down to his last 200(!). They say FV753210 2530-99-824-7531 on the tyres but interestingly also say FV864578 on the wheels themselves. All NOS, stored outside but none the worse for it. I hope that helps! Andy
  21. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced supplier of the correct (DEF STAN 80-9) aluminium fire-resisting paint used for the interior of post-war MVs? I'm after some to repaint the inside of my Abbot. The usual suspects only seem to have "silver paint". Andy
  22. Chris - Out of interest, what are you planning to do about the interior silver paint? I've just been having a chat with Clive about DEF STANs and debating whether to re-do the Abbot with the proper aluminium fire-resistant paint, assuming that I can find some. Andy
