  1. Why are Tanks like Lemmings? Andy
  2. The ANR headsets must have power applied to them, not just for ANR to work but also for general operation. That means you need to change the green IB3 and CB2s for the yellow-fronted ones. The pressel also needs to pass power to the headset, so you either need the later pressels or add the extra wire to the older ones. Andy
  3. I've usually found them the cheapest for everything. In particular their FV430 filters are about half the price of other dealers I could mention! Andy
  4. I second that. They're my first port of call for any FV432 parts, and other dealers would do well to look at their online stock list and ordering system! Andy
  5. I had originally thought that myself, but presumably if the Home Office don't think the originals are Firearms, then by definition imitations can't be RIFs? Andy
  6. For my 432 and 433 I spoke to FJ, Carole Nash and Premium Choice/Roadsure. The quotes were all about the same but I went with Roadsure in the end (~£150 for the two vehicles) because they seemed more interested and knowledgable on the 'phone. Andy
  7. I've just received this letter from the Home Office in response to my request for advice on the legality of Smoke Grenade Launchers: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reference: T4323/11 5 April 2011 Dear Mr Michael Thank you for your e-mail of 7 March about smoke grenade dischargers. As you may know, some types of launching equipment are subject to control under section 5(1)(ae) of the Firearms Act 1968 (as amended) - ‘any rocket launcher, or any mortar, for projecting a stabilised missile, other than a launcher or mortar designed for line-throwing or pyrotechnic purposes or as signalling apparatus’. Ultimately, only a court can decide on the status of any particular weapon but it is our view that many smoke grenade dischargers can be regarded as pyrotechnic launchers and, as such, they would not be subject to control under the Firearms Act. Yours sincerely M Young --------------------------------------------------- Based on that advice (and noting the understandable comment about the courts) I'd be happy to have live dischargers fitted with a copy of the letter in the vehicle. Andy
  8. Palletline's online quote says £99.60 inc VAT. I'd be interested to see if you find anything cheaper as I'm looking to ship a pallet of 432 track and Palletline is the cheapest I've found so far. Andy
  9. Yes - agreed! I've already tried pushing the extractors forward but they're very stiff. A C-spanner has just been found on eBay to release the spring so I can dismantle and clean the breech mechanism later. Andy
  10. Thanks both - I'll have a chat with someone who knows about commercial systems and see what they say. My main concerns are the safety side (pressure testing) and whether the diaphragm between the air and hydraulics is still intact. Andy
  11. I wonder how effective this is, though. If they find an untaxed vehicle they'll just write a letter to the registered keeper, which is fine if they're a law-abiding person. If they're not (which is the sort of people we're talking about), and there isn't a registered keeper or it's a false address, or it's a cloned number plate .... Andy
  12. I've been in Weymouth this week and couldn't help notice a sudden outbreak of DVLA "tax checking" vehicles with ANPR cameras parked in lay-bys. I haven't seen this before - is it something new or have they been around for a while? Andy
  13. When freeing and dropping the gun crutch on my Abbot the effort required to elevate the gun was enormous, due to the equilibrator system having no air pressure in it. The equilibrator is an air over hydraulic system with a ram that balances the weight of the barrel to keep the effort required to elevate the gun constant regardless of angle. The pressure gauge on mine reads zero, as does every other one I've seen in private hands; it's supposed to be charged to 875psi. I suspect that either they eventually leak or may even have been vented on safety grounds before disposal. Does anyone have experience in renovating this or similar systems? Andy
  14. It's amazing what difference some hard work and a coat of paint makes - well done! Andy
  15. There's another one available if you like .... http://www.edisposals.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/Disposals-Public-Site/en_US/-/GBP/ViewProductDetail-Start;pgid=MieqQ4wkQg8000ArvQ_8K1sp0000DJzvoVcr?ProductUUID=eIDAqBIQIhQAAAEupZZcNt5o&CatalogCategoryID=VaLAqBELPagAAAED8GeasfoP&JumpTo=OfferList Andy
  16. I wonder what the significance is of "with the barrel pointing towards Preston"? :-) There's some assorted videos here: Andy
  17. Give me a shout - you're welcome to drop by! Andy
  18. Right on the border, between Tavistock and Launceston. Andy
  19. Delivered to her new home in sunny Devon for some TLC on Friday. Being sunny Devon, it poured with rain. With no gearbox to twiddle round and facing downhill, a gentle prod was all that was needed to get her down on her own. Andy
  20. Hmm - the batteries shouldn't be getting that low in a running vehicle. Have you checked that the charging voltage is OK (28.5V +/- 0.5V)? The Hawkers in my 432 were at 12.8V the other day having been stood for over a month. Andy
  21. You're running an entirely separate 12V system? Andy
  22. Yes - see my previous post! Five total successes so far, two being a bit more awkward as I've only got the 2.5A Pulsetech charger. Check the OCV - if it's above 12V you shouldn't have any trouble. I've recovered two with OCVs in the 10V region, the only time you probably won't be able to resuscitate them is if someone's killed them by using an incorrect old-fashioned charger. Andy
  23. Would that be from somewhere near Bude, out of interest? :-) Andy
  24. Isn't this what Directive 91/477 is supposed to achieve? There's at least one Russian seller of deactivated weapons who suggests it does: "European Weapons Directive 91/477 EEC Annex III (a): For the purposes of this Annex objects which corresponds to the definition of a 'firearm' shall not be included in that definition if they: (a) have been rendered permanently unfit for use by the application of technical procedures which are guaranteed by an official body or recognised by such a body." Andy
  25. It comes with a Bulldog conversion takeout pack reconditioned in 1995, but I'm always interested in what's about! Andy
