  1. From my understanding (third party) when the turkish army landed at Escape beach nr Kyrenia, they came under intense fire from a gun emplacement high up in the mountain, two tanks were dispatched via the mountain goat track as it was at the time starting in Karsiyaka towards Kozonkoy which is now a very pleasent route to follow now. The first tank hit a land mine which blew out the left hand track which still lies there today. The crew were recovered unharmed by the second tank which then pushed the first one out of the way to its position now and then proceeded on to destroy the gun emplacement proberbly saving hundreds of lives. The inscription details the names /ages/ranks of the two crews and describes /praises their heroic action and is a place of "pilgrimage" during the annual anniversary of the intervention.
  2. Well after a couple or three trips around the mountains at the back of Lapta. We found the Old Tank. It has been there since 1974 but it must be looked after as the paintwork is in very good nick. The tank tracks are just lying on the road above where the tank is. The tank is cemented in around the base with steps down from the road to it. The road is very narrow with lots of hairpin bends and sheer drops. If you went off the road i dont think they would ever find you.
  3. OK will give it a try. Hope we don't. 1) Get Lost. 2) Pulled by the army for taking pics. We are in Esentepe when we drive from Kyrenia we pass a big TRNC army camp. They have tanks lots of trucks and jeeps. But recon we would get shot if we stopped to take pics. They are a bit on the edgy side these guys.
  4. Hi trustmeimamechanic, We are going up there next week. Will have look around. It will give me something to do. Ha Ha.
  5. Hi All. Took some visiting friends to the Open Air Musuem Kyrenia North Cyprus. Took a few more pics while i was there.
  6. Hi. Yes The Tree of idelness at Belapais, Very nice up there, we were there yesterday. A lot of the building work has stopped now mainly due to rouge builders. Lots of british have paid the money but the builders haven't finished. It's quite big news here. We are renting, much safer. Lots of Land Rovers now with the Turkish Army.
  7. Hi all. Didn't like living in Chiang Mai. So we have moved to North Cyprus. Getting closer to Europe now. Spotted this Open Air Musuem nr Kyrenia. This is where (I believe) the Turkish Army invaded Cyprus. Thought these pics would interest you all.
  8. Hi Rog8811. The pics of the Old Army trucks i posted are some where else on this site, but cant find them now. The guy who posted them was from Cumbria. Some years ago there was a Trotters Reliant Van a Private collection in Keswick. Cheers Bill.
  9. Hi Rog8811. Nicked you idea. I googled what used to be a scrap years ago. Near Carlisle. There used to be all sorts of Cars. Trucks. Fire Engines. Ex Army stuff in here. It must be 25+ years since i was there. It looks as if it now workshops. But parked at the gates are these. Thought you may be interested in these. I dont know who owns the workshops. The pleace is called Grinsdale Bridge. Near Carlisle. Does any one know how old these google maps are? Cheers. Bill.
  10. Hi. It's been a while. Well i am no further forward with GGX 583. But thanks to bizfreeq did find it here. http://www.strathclydefirepreservationgroup.org/appliances/GGX_583.htm The reason i came on here was: I found this 'photo. on the back is written DLI 1985. Thats me and the family. And decided to try and trace it. But according to the discription on GGX 583 on the www.strathclydefirepreservationgroup.org Website. Douglas Currie displayed her in 1983/84 at the Dumfries & Galloway Vintage Machinery Show. GGX 583 is now in the Strathclyde Fire Preservation Group museum i think. I have asked the kids and they say the picture with us all on is 1984/5. So there is a real mix up with dates somewhere along the line. I am so sure i bought the K2 in the early 80s. Sadly i have no paperwork now. But when i sold the K2 it was painted green. I have been in touch with the Strathclyde Fire Preservation Group. some time ago now. But no reply. And i dont know how old the museum picture is. Oh well. It was fun trying to sort this out, I enjoyed reading the forums here. and hope the K2 is enjoying retirement. Thanks for all your replys. Bill.
  11. Hi Mark. Thanks for the link. Brilliant. I can now contact these people and put an end to my quest. Will let you know. Thanks again. Bill.
  12. Hi Tony. It's very very difficult for a Farang (Foreigner) to buy any vehicle here, there are so many hurdles put in your way. It was the same in India. they make it almost impossible. I think we will stick with the rented motorbike for the moment, and wait and see what we are going to do. Interesting seeing the restoration of the K2 on another thread. When i bought mine it was in a bad state, but not that bad. Not much luck in tracing GGX 583 yet. Bill
  13. Hi. Yeah we also seen a few Willys Jeeps in Phuket, when we were there a couple of years ago. We have only been here (Chiang Mai) for a couple of months, and seen quite a few Willys Jeeps. A Dodge WC and various other things running around. There is a very nice International Harvester Bus, being used as a cafe just up the road from us. I will try and get some pics. Bill.
  14. Hi. Yes must admit my K2 did not help in my marrage either. Yeah, have seen quite a few MUTTS knocking around. And quite a few Mahindra Jeeps. Bill.
  15. What can you say about this. Local Bus. Ooty. Tamil Nadu. India. By the way most of the tyres were bald. Bill.
