  3. Anyone ever see a movie about some lost (oil workers??) in the desert who, whilst on their last legs discover an aerial sticking out of the ground... some digging later they uncover a WW2 tank which amazingly starts up and delivers them from the clutches of some bad guys?? I would love a copy of this movie. I think it was black and white (but I was only 9 or 10 when I saw it) . I think they were oil workers or similar. Either way I think it was a German tank (thats probably why it started...) Anyone ??
  4. Hello all I am trying to find out if my ferret ever saw service in some desert area. Its army reg was 02 CC 12. During its renovation, several builders bags of sand were removed from the interior, it had a desert colour paint (about 2 layers down, out of about 16 layers of paint), and at the rear it has 4 brackets welded on the engine cover plate - which would line up very nicely for a stowage basket over the engine maybe ?. There is another odd bracket welded to 2 studs on the right top / side of the hull. It is a Mk 1/1 liaison. The yellow paint can still be found in some places. I have its army records which show service with different regiments (BAOR) but only go up to 1989. It is mainly wishful thinking but it would be great to find out if it had been somewhere other than Germany. Does anyone have any information? PS Happy new year to all. :-D
  5. Thanks for the warm welcome Here is a picture of "ROSY" !! Merry Christmas to all.
  6. What can I say !! Thanks very much for the information, you have saved me a lot of time - if you know the website you saw the box on I would be grateful if you would pass on the info. Thanks again Jim
  7. Here is the pic. Whats your opinion?
  8. Well that sounds like a good start ! If they can pull a WW2 Russian tank out of a pond in the middle of a forest (and have it running within weeks) then we stand a good chance !!
  9. OOps.... :??? Patience was never my strong point. Thanks for the reply I removed the plate slowly and carefully releasing the spring pressure - I was expecting a huge bang when the bolt threads ran out but I could feel the tension coming off. I removed the plate and carefully lifted the spring out, followed by the bucket. The busbar shaft was now free, and moving nicely (Hopefully ) I just need to replace the spring - retension etc. It will probably never work again. What I did achieve though was seeing the sludge that was in the box after draining the old oil out. I measured the oil level before I started and it looked OK (slightly low though). The amount drained out was 7 pints (book says it should be 1.25 imp gall.) I reckon there is at least 1 pint of sludge and rubbish in there that would not drain out. So i need to flush it out somehow. The ferret has stood for many years and there was a lot of moisture in there too. Will post the outcome good or bad. Need some gearbox oil now - what shoudl I use?
  10. I live near an old WW2 airfield , Church Broughton, used as a vehicle storage depot by the army just after the war. Additionally there was a REME depot about 6 miles away at Marchington, and another army depot at Hilton. A few years ago my dad was stopped by a motorist who was searching for a nearby camp he used to serve on whilst in the army. He recounted the tale of taking an amphibious jeep for test on a nearby pond , and the vehicle quickly sank. He and his buddy returned the paperwork to the office and claimed to have parked the vvehicle back in the ranks along with several hundred other / jeeps bedfords etc. The lost vehicle was not missed and the event went by unreported. The locality has changed so much that he was unable to get his bearings and was asking my father for help. My dad was unable to help and the motorist departed . Does anyone know anything of this story - there are several ponds that fit the bill, and one was searched by police years ago when several Vickers Machine Guns were recovered during a dry spell when they were spotted sticking out of the bank, but no Jeep. I know it will be a rusting heap by now but its would be an interesting item to search for? Any old soldiers remember this ?
  11. The gear selector pedal is jammed in the up position. I dropped the linkage off the gearbox end and the jam is inside the gearbox. I am assuming that i have confused the mechanism and the main spring is applying pressure to the gear selector mechanism. I was going to remove the large plate off the offside of the gearbox, as from the drawings i assumed that might release the spring pressure and allow me to relocate things. However ... I thought i had better ask advice first just incase :-d
  12. Hello All I have just joined having purchased a 1959 Ferret. I live between Stoke and Derby and would like to hear any advice on Ferret Gearbox issues. My ferret is semi restored, a runner and almost a driver! I think there is a ferret in nearby Uttoxeter (and weirdly it has the next registration number to mine) - I think mine is 02 CC 12. I am keen to hear from any gerbox experts as I think thats where I need the advice the most ! Jim
