1. Well I was told by my friends and colleagues that it would be in poor taste to work on the Pinz tomorrow, being Christmas day...... seems an awful waste of a day off work  So I thought tomorrow I would plan a special day for the wife and I. I am taking her to the Army museum  So I can take picture of HMV's for you guys....... I also organised buying a rather large box, with spares in it that I have to ship from the UK . This is the box with spares in it....... I also stumbled accross in my collection of Pinz photos this odd one from UK. It has different tool bins and what appears to be a pallet lifter on the back..
2. On my phone responding as waiting in a carpark. I wouldn't be to fussed about original processes as most vehicle welding is by far the worse welding I have ever seen and most factory welding would not pass an examination. On my pinz I am forever repairing shoddy welding and my landrover was the same. Of inteerest the soviets invented stick and saw welding hence they could produce tanks quicker whilst everyone else at that point were still riveting. Funny to look at the old welded tanks at duxford. A welding fourm could be useful, i touched on this in the inspection thread
3. I tend to agree with Robin that unless you know what you are doing dont go fancy and dont weld structural items. Also that welding is or perhaps better was a trade with a high degree of skill. Welding is like cooking a cake, ie you need a recipie which gets followed eg how many volts, heat input etc. If the recipie is followed the material will have the material properies you want. If you dont get the recipie correct the weld can look pretty but the weld will fail without warning. you want.
4. I believe the wire is pricier but to give and idea of it's qualities, we used a large percentage of FCAW welding the steel columns together on Taipei's TFCC 101 bilding (now the worlds second tallest building, but at least not bankrupt like the new one). The column where 100mm thick but you can run passes quite quickly.
5. No-Gas Mig is called FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) in most the world. In the UK they often call it MAG (Metal Active Gas). Anyway good stuff, good penetration. Your get slag of course and the fumes are reputed to be the worst but is favoured due to it's high deposition rates.

Ndt

I thought as many people are rebuilding vehicles from nothing I would post some info on NDT (Non Destructive Testing) and welding. NDT is basically what is used to look for cracks. PT (Penetrant Testing) is the most simple form of NDT where a dye is applied to the component and it is allowed to soak in. The excess surface dye is removed and a developer is applied to soak the dye back out. The defect has to be open to the surface. Kits are readily available but of interest if you soak something in oil, clean it and apply chalk dust you get the same result (albeit not as sensitive). Anyway, I hope this subject is of some use
7. I see the spelling given to me was incorrect http://www.nungarin.com/schedule.htm http://www.collectionsaustralia.net.au/org/1607/about/ and Truscott Airbase. Most the stuff was laying around as the place was inaccessible. I knew someone that risked a landing there years ago and found fantastic stuff but you could not carry it out. Recently reopened to service east timor http://kimberleycruising.com.au/Kimberley%20History/truscott.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mungalalu_Truscott_Airbase http://www.shorelands.com.au/sa_gallery.html
8. Also got close and personal with my trailer... - draw bar bent - body twisted So I think some serious repairs will be happening........ hence the old school chisel attack
9. Well ripped the winch solenoid pack to pieces..... here's hoping I can reassemble it
10. had to have a look on ebay but none on.. or parts  I like the green one
11. It was worse............................................................................................................................................................... I had to get pulled out by a Mitsubishi Pajero The odd part is supposedly if the vacuum fails it should default to 4wd not go off :argh:
12. http://www.dodge50.co.uk/rb44-story-3.html My opinion is that it was blown out of proportion similar to: - Jeeps to MUTTS - Series Land Rovers to Perentie's It was a weird choice though as I would even say the Diesel Stonefield is perhaps marginally better as the RB44 is a high vehicle
13. Interesting thread, I seen snow once...... I think when I was 7
14. then being bored, I got ahead of myself....... The 4wd vacum failed and ended up stuck on the side of the road. More to fix..........:argh:
15. Well whilst in Japan the trailers arrived Lots to do :coffee:
16. It is near on akin to grave robbing :argh: I went there in '94 and the Lonely Planet guide book said don't go there alone (they are very correct and I am not what would be called a softy)
17. I know, I was in Cambridge last year for 6 months and filling the car up there brought tears to my eyes. Mind you I am in Japan today and the fuel here is also cheaper than UK. Can you not find a way of sacking all your politicians and replacing them with normal people........... (sorry ranting)
18. theres a big yard in one of the wheatbelt towns in West Oz as I was sent a piccy from there recently (on my other laptop). The council owns them but its a shame as rusting away (I'll try to get the pictures from who sent them to me earlier). Also a lot of stuff at truscott airbase which has been reopened for servicing the East Timor rigs.
19. Yeah the pedal one has be a bit befuddled as need to study the book as may need adjusting as the return spring appears to be fitted correctly (again may be over thinking it). I got all the belts so is going to be one of those weekend jobs :argh:. I'll have to show my tool supplier the parts numbers se if I can get some luck. yes 30p a litre for diesel. I changed the tyres last weekend and then had to skip accross to Japan
20. yeah thought it was as they closed of the entire area for ages during the recovery...
21. well last ones, dont want to flood your thread A Boomerang and a bombing run on a Japanese ship (was given this years ago)
