I think the most important thing is to talk to someone, be it in person, on the phone or via the internet. Just that contact with someone may be priceless.

This is true I've had people visit whom i haven't seen For 30 year. Another guy I randomly helped with his project 4 years ago came first

    Mike,

So sorry to hear about the changes in your life, sent you a PM. yes life is funny how we can be closer to people on places like here than family. I echo that.

Please keep your chin up and know others care, look forward to getting a reply from the PM

    yours

    Robin in Canada

Thanks Robin... it's nice just hear a kind word from time to time

Unfortunately many people are in the same boat as you. All one can do is play the cards the way they are dealt. Some people get a smooth ride and others live in the grip of a perpetual hurricane and storm.  Good luck with your project.

Yep everyone has their ups and downs.  I suppose what's got me down is I always liked being Mr average in social life helping people out. So got more closer friends in car sites than family.

Being Christmas and everything has fallen apart has been a double hit.  Mother is dying,  father has lost his marbles to top the list

I guess I'm lucky as most guys don't talk about it and they a found later sucking on exhaust fumes

    Mike,

Have you thought about using Chev (or Ford) Blitz axles and transfer case as there are still plenty of those old trucks lying around in Australia. The 15cwt C15A would be about right size I guess.

I have heard of one with blitz axles

I just kinda think it's sacrilegious but have to admit you do see them for $1500.  Any idea on diff ratios?

Depending on your gvw could you use RB44 axles ?

That would be nice but I would need someone to do a fit up in the UK so I knew what pieces to buy

The wheels, gearbox, disc brakes, steering box would be required.  What is the wheel pcd on an rb44?

I prefer if it could work as ql diffs are historic.

    Regards

    Mike

    I recall that United Service Garage in Portsmouth did 4x4 conversions on Bedfords. Just found this article about them;

    https://archive.commercialmotor.com/article/11th-february-1984/49/four-wheel-drive-is-the-way-to-treat-sods

I see the Bedford in the photo on this thread has a West Sussex registration, so a possibility it was a USG conversion as Portsmouth is close by.

    Very informative, thanks

    Hello John,

Many years ago I read a magazine article about aircraft, possibly Spitfires, that had been used as static test subjects during atomic tests in Australia.

As I remember, the article was more about people visiting the site where the aircraft were parked than the tests.

Sometime after the tests the aircraft were put up for sale.  I presume that they had been examined and were 'safe' to sell.  Arrangements were made for potential purchasers to travel to the site where the aircraft were parked to examine them.  This chance to fly into the restricted/prohibited area was seized by some flying clubs and private pilots as they were thinking of buying a second hand Spitfire.

I have no recollection of any further details of the article or magazine, but as the aircraft were being offered for sale then there is a chance that the Land Rover you seek was, as you surmise, not buried but possibly disposed of.

    Good luck on your quest

    Dan

Pretty sure they were Mustangs as when I was doing a preapprenticeshop course he was involved.  He got one very cheap it was said at the time he bought the whole aircraft for the cost of the cooling cowling.  He was affiliated with the Bullcreek aviation museum and he was one of the first people to fly into Truscott former RAF base in the late seventies early 80's

His slide show on the trip was the basis of my fascination with Truscott the pilot and Truscott the secret airbase.

As for contaminated vehicles I know there was some Aussie tanks, decontaminated.  As fer English gear I saw a documentary they agreed to clean the site and it was shipped back to UK and buried in Middlesborough
