  1. Sorry, no, it is not mine. I photographed it a few years ago and thought it looked similar.
  2. Not seen that before but i dont think it is related. I found another photo of it and it says "The Peerless Whittler - The Burke manufacturing Co". Lots of different models on this website: Mechanical Pencil Sharpeners ~ 1910-1919 (officemuseum.com)
  3. I picked up this rather nice and sparky Simms SR4X Magneto. It has an RAF stamp on it and i think that it is anti clockwise rotation. What was the SR4X used on within the RAF? The J has just the SR4. any thoughts please anybody.
  4. "There was only one tree in the field Padre and you had to park the bloomin Riker on top of it!"
  5. Yes, you are probably right. Also the nail varnish is a bit dodgy too.
  6. We had completed this task very quickly and the tyres were loaded for the trip home and putting back on the lorry. A photo shoot had been arranged with Barrys B Type and a lovely young model who wore a replica LGOC clippie - bus conductor uniform. I am pleased to say that the solid tyre vehicle enthusiasts did not bat an eyelid nor act out of the ordinary to cause this young lady any embarrassment.
  7. Second wheel we pressed sprocket down so the oval tyre had to go on first. Unfortunately this was too easy and we could see day light between the tyre and the wheel. This was no good, but luckily we knew of a steel fabricator nearby who cut as a steel shim to go in between the wheel and the tyre. We had to hold this in place with a pair of ratchet straps and tapped over the edge of the shim to hold it in place. The shim started to runkle (a new word we made up on the day) which we had to tap down with a hammer. Second tyre went in over the top and job was done.
  8. As you will already know our next big task was to press the tyres on to the wheels. I had taken everything up to the press a few weeks ago and we had a big gathering this Saturday to put the tyres on the wheels. All four tyres are NOS, but two of them had been squashed at some stage and pressed into an oval shape. We had tried to jack this out but were concerned that pressing these tyres on might be a challenge. The first wheel we did we put sprocket up and the good tyre went on really well. We even had to add a bit of oil as the fit was quite tight. The second tyre pressed on over the top and the wheel was done in quick time. Good job too as it was an incredibly hot day.
  9. Anybody recognise what this gearbox came off. The grease came with it
  10. Whereabouts in South Africa? Sandstone?
  11. When asked about the Leyland the AWM reply: Yes we have a c 1918 Leyland truck in the Memorial collection and it was on display in the early 2000s for several years . It was restored by a previous owner in the 1970s and the Memorial acquired it in the 1990s. It has had conservation work done on it while in the Memorials care. Our records state the chassis and mechanical components are originals. The tray is not original and the vehicle does require more restoration work. There are no plans to complete restoration at this time.
  12. I have been advised that: Chassis 21625 is a reconstructed RAF type, rebuilt at Ham Works in early 1921 so, if it retained most of its original bits it would have been originally built between 4/16 and 11/18. The engine model is S5.36, which was in production 1916-26, so perhaps there was no engine number plate on the engine – a cast brass plate at the top, middle of the aluminium crankcase on the offside. If there was one, it would probably have had the same rebuild number as the chassis number, ie. 21625.
  13. Is a NOVA application required. Asking for a friend. They privately own an MV from outside the EU which they have just brought into the UK. I thought that a NOVA would be required but the HMRC guidance states: Who should complete a notification to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)? You must notify HMRC if you are a: VAT registered business, a non VAT registered business or a private individual bringing a land vehicle into the UK that you have purchased from within the European Union (EU) VAT registered business bringing a land vehicle into the UK that you have purchased from outside the EU person or agent making a notification on behalf of any of the above VAT registered business who leases a vehicle from another VAT registered business within the EU where the lease includes an option to purchase the vehicle You are not required to notify HMRC if you are a: private individual or a non VAT registered business importing vehicles purchased outside the EU visitor to the UK on holiday on a short-term secondment student on a recognised course VAT registered business approved to use the DVLA Automated First Registration and Licensing (AFRaL) scheme either electronically or on paper using forms V55(1) or V55(2) VAT registered businesses bringing a land vehicle into the UK on a temporary basis from outside the EU They have imported it into the UK.and the clearance company have notified HMRC. So, i presume that they don't have to do anything else? Any thoughts please anybody? Thanks Tim.
  14. Thank you, What was the engine number please Doug?
  15. Sorry. The UK collector was not me (if that is how it was coming across), but the chap who provided the drawings and thought i might know how they were getting on with it. Anyway, it looks a super nice restoration and i like that they put the swivel brackets on the side which really makes it. I will send the photos on to him. So, is the Leyland on public display? Thanks Tim
  16. Thank you for your comprehensive reply. My reason for asking is that a UK collector provided them with drawings for the body and he was curious as to whether they had completed the restoration. I don't think i have ever seen it although i have seen photos of the FWD (before and after) and their Crossley. I normally keep my eyes open for updates on WW1 vehicle restorations but the Leyland had completely dropped off the radar. Thanks again Tim
  17. I think that they have had it for a long time but the restoration was not completed?
  18. The Australian War memorial had an RAF Leyland that they were restoring. Does anybody know how they are getting on with it?
  19. It certainly looks like a tree growing out through the side of the bonnet in the 4th photo. That might explain a few things.
