  1. With tyres the only constant is the wheel size, internal diameter. Overall diameter depends on the tyre makers original design use, type of compound, and tread pattern. Off Hyway, Mixed use, On Hyway, Long Haul or Urban. Steer, Drive,or Lift Axle. Then you get into Pneumatic Specialist Pneumatic, or Solid. I once drove a rig on the docks with a mix of Pneumatic, Pneumatic with tyre fill and Solid on different wheel stations.
  2. If it has an R in the description that means they are Radial ply construction. Radial and Cross ply constructed tyres should not be mixed on the same axle. They have different Rolling and adhesion characteristics, also different speed and weight carrying abilityes. Radial and Cross ply have different bead shapes but generally they are interchangable on tubeless and split rim wheels, the internal finnish of the tyre is smoother on a tube type tyre. With split rim wheels it is esential to make sure the locking rim grips its position on the wheel and they are both clean before starting the assembly procedure. If possible use a cage when inflating
  3. As long as tyres are equal size accross the axle should be O.K. Sounds as though the ones you have on at the moment are miss matched It depends on the width of the wheel as to weather the tyre /wheel fit is correct. A 20 inch wheel rim will fit all of the tyre sizes you have mentioned, but a 10.00 x20 will have a different bead fit to a 12.00x20 on the same wheel centre, giving the inflated tyre a different profile. Also a different load/ speed rating.
  4. Sounds like a thrust bearing failure in the steering box. I do not think Mk1s have power steering.
  5. All I can give is moral support but best of luck in your endevours
  6. What a shame. Its possible to get the crank out I think but it will difficult supporting the rear of the block in situ with no bell housing. I cannot remember how much room there is at the front. Have you got any help?
  7. This is an open ended debate, It goes back to the old question of what constitutes a restoration. A sensus number is a clue in the mosaic of the full picture. At sometime in service I have no doubt that a vehicle like that will have existed. I am just pleased a vehicle in that condition is around now to be talked about. As old spec paints become unobtainable and colour matches become more difficult we may just have to say they did their best. No more Lead in paint or plastic, No Asbestos, I used to be involved with a project to collect cenespheres from a power station lagooon and they went to manufacture high quality insulation material. It is a hobby and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
  8. I do not think it matters either way, the fact is there is now a vehicle that has been preserved in pristine condition. Peoples circumstances change over time. Some hand painted lines can always be introduced. Some ordinary people can paint straight lines without any aids. Just enjoy the vehicle, whatever the price is I would bet It does not cover the full cost of restoration, if all of the time and materials workshop costs as well as buying the vehicle in the first place were properly included.
  9. I have a rear axle for a DUKW if you are still looking for one.

    Obituary

There are fewer of the few left now with the death being announced of Squadron Leader Geoffery Wellum D.F.C. aged 96. He apparently was the youngest pilot to fly in the Battle of Britain. Condolence to his family and thanks to him for being there R.I.P.
  12. I dont think so he is cutting his own path walking in his own boots.
  13. I found this today the owner will part with it. If you know what it is off, It says Ford on the hub cap.
  14. Hes not trying to fill anyones shoes, he is doing his own thing.
  15. I know it is not strictly about vehicles, But I saw Guys program about Russia last night. He is developing into a really good niche presenter, in my opinion. Diverse topics, and involvment with the subject matter, It opened my eyes about Russian people.

    Where are they off to?
  17. Same start line looking for an electrical fault. Is the generator brush type or slip ring, are the brushes in good order, is the switch gear using the correct field coils? Be carefull with the internal dust as period generators and electric motors used asbestos wrapping on the internal wiring.
  18. Just a quick clean and check all of the electrical conections, Carefully put your hand near or on the starter motor to see if there is any heat comming through the casing. If there is that could be an indication of an internal problem
  19. I have a few 432 track sections looking for a new home.Thank you they now have a knew home.
  20. This vehicle looks a fantastic restoration, a credit to the people involved.
  21. There is a one for sale on Millweb at the moment. It has had a lot of work done on the braking system so the owner Graham Collins may have some usefull information, there is a contact number listed.
  22. You could try Bygone Bedford, P.A.Blanchard. or Green Machine Surplus, there is also Bernie Smith at Kettering. They are in the U.K.
  23. Years ago trucks were designed with front and rear wheels with different offsets and you did not mix them, unless it was a get me home situation. Modern trucks by and large have the same offsets all around. You can re-engineer modern wheels to fit older trucks but you are back to spending money.
