  1. The price has gone up its now £157.64 + £6 p&p + VAT on both = £192.28 Still worth it though. If you do fit it, remove the BALLAST lead from the ignition switch. Otherwise the full 24v is applied to the coil on start up. This is no longer needed with the improved spark & if this is boosted further by being given 24volts may establish tracking in the distributor cap.
  2. Yes it should then just lift out. I have replaced baseplates on several distributors with no problems. But I came to fit another Jolley kit & both the distributors I had chosen to be possible recipients, the base plate would not come out. I tried WD40 around the edge & modest heat around the metal body, but still wouldn't budge. So I chose the one with the most worn plates & gently smashed it out. I gave it all a good wash out with solvent to get rid off the powder bits of baseplate. Was a good opportunity to clean & re-grease the spindle weights. Don't worry that one spring may be loose. Deliberately there is a 7-turn spring & the other is 6-turn one. You will need to re-use the two base plate bolts, it is rather silly Jolley provides new ones but they are at least 3mm too long!
  3. Mick I don't have a Ferret, I am into Humbers but I believe you have reserve tank. But I had old fuel being drawn in because the fuel guage read the fuel level in the tank you weren't using! Anyway it ran very badly then died as an exhaust valve tappet shattered. I didn't realise I was drawing in the grotty stuff & kept topping up the OK tank which was not switched in. Check your fuel tank breather is clear, many were fitted with a non-return valve in case of vehicle overturning. The valve is a haven to widlife & grot. Is also found an embolism of platercine in the breather left over from some wading nonsense. As for copper pipe I tend to use pipe from B&Q for central heating jobs. Its metric though not as flexible as the proper stuff & as metric you have to file the connectors slightly. Its just easy to get hold of. As Neil suggested do a compression test anyway. If they are nice & high that's great you have a benchmark for future checks. But low 2&3 or 4&5 are a red flag. BTW all those things mentioned are not said through any cleverness on my part, they are all things that have gone wrong for me, damn nuisance at the time but good to have learnt once the crisis was over!
  4. Mick. Is the fuel fresh or been hanging around for a while? Did it run ok once or has it been like that since you had it? The condenser that you replaced was it a brand new one or NOS, as they are often leak? The plugs your are using are they RSN13P they foul easily (unless you are using electronic ignition, if you use Rover plugs RSN12Y they foul up less easily. How are you cleaning the plugs? Nothing beats sand blasting, a wire brush can't clean inside. But even if the plugs are well used & clean there can be problems with the mica insulator abrading down as plugs are fitted & refitted. Are you absolutely certain the plug leads are on the right plugs? Is your distributor cap pitted / cracked if it has been reconditioned, they paint red oxide inside the metal bits sometimes it get splashed inside the cap itself. There may be a hairline crack in the rotor arm, have you changed that? Is air leaking in the fuel tank changeover switch or in the bleed valve on the fuel filter. Have you checked the fuel filter is it full of rust & bogies? Is your vacuum leaking from somewhere like the resevoir or to brake servo? Have you changed the engine oil now that it is diluted with fuel? If you do a compression test they should ideally be 110 psi but the minimum field standard is 90 psi. If 2&3 or 4&5 are lower than the rest, then your head gasket is going I'm afraid. The ismus between 2&3 and 4&5 is quite narrow in addition the torquing of the cylinder head bolts is difficult as there is not enough room to get a socket on the torque wrench here. So RR say use a box spanner & I think a 6in tommy bar, the EMER I think says the same but with a 7in tommy bar. Now did the last fitter have a strong arm? But there is a risk that it may not have been done up well enough unless you use a 9/16 torque offset socket. Green = 2&3 going :-( Red = 4&5 gawn  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v684/fv1620/Dscf1878a.jpg[/img]
  5. Ian, I have just sent you the EMER extract. If anyone wants pdf of brake section of EMER WHEELED VEHICLES U 262/2 which is the Technical Description which seems to cover all makes 2-Ton 4-Whld trailers in the FV2500 series. Let me know & I'll email it.
  6. Ian, I'll email you the brake section of EMER WHEELED VEHICLES U 262/2 which is the Technical Description which seems to cover all makes 2-Ton 4-Whld trailers in the FV2500 series, so hope it might help. Its 8 pages on braking so bear with me, I'll put it in a pdf if thats alright.
  7. But will those who won't use a real name be too shy break their confidentiality by revealing themselves to us?
  8. Ah the trouble with those is that you mustn't machine wash or use anything other than warmish water. Otherwise it comes off again. Nor iron it, but I don't think many people iron T shirts. I bought one of those kits (the "free" T shirt is always XXL which is curious as there is a picture of a child on the front wearing the product) Anyway I have made several T shirts with pictures of my vehicle. The problem is not only is it a bore hand washing but they get very grubby at shows. This is a combination of sun oil, all the various fluid our vehicles excrete, beer, curry, Beltring dust etc
  9. And of course now one can be more prolific with digital photo taking! I can recall trips to Ludgershall thinking I've only so many rolls of film left I better save some films in case I see something better!
  10. Adrian, I have seen some pictures of it taken by Steve. I don't think it was a water cannon, the other variants were APC & prison van although the roles did seem to change with time.
  11. I've got the civy workshop manuals & some EMERs for various Westminsters. But is it AM or FM, HI band or LOW band, dash mount - I assume but there was a boot mount. You should have asked me I have about 6 Westminsters of various sorts. Unless you are going for NI set up I doubt if a LtWt would have Westminsters. Pigs definitely had as there was an EMER issued. There is a very nice (IWM pic I think) of a Mk 1 pig ambulance being led out on patrol by a RM Rover 1 with red crosses being driven by a padre. The pig has an aerial but the Rover seems not to be equipped.
  12. Adrian did you ever come accoss any Commers (as in RUC) there was a grey one on Otterburn ranges. Just trying to account for them all, which I think totalled 14.
  13. Oh you found it painful then?
  14. I see there is no option for a blue serge jacket :naughty:
  15. The trouble is you can only have a meaningful relationship with one vehicle at a time. The hunt, the chase, the courtship, the deal, the novelty, the getting it home, the first time out together. Then the novelty will either wear off or the new one is the one you want to be with all the time to the detriment of the others. I have a Shorland that I haven't driven for 10 years & pre-SORN and a pig that I haven't attempted to repair after 5 years when it started doing 20 mpg of OIL. But Jack I suppose you are younger & have more energy & can spread yourself about more, on the vehicles. But sometimes people end up with an automotive harem that they are unable to keep pace with :naughty:
  16. Paul, look at the notice carefully not just for what it says but it looks as it has got hit by shrapnel, which is a bit sobering.
  17. Looking in a 1974 Catalogue of Army Publications there is a User Handbook for the Trailer Chassis, 2-ton, 4-whld, Brockhouse it is Army Code No.60976. But looking in a 2001 Catalogue it is no longer listed. Yes would be interested in the FV number esp the suffix & the full asset code also the NSN if that is shown. But there may still be a User Handbook for the body once we find out what it's role was.
  18. Well dang me you are quite right Brockhouse it is  What date is it? It's curious that there are no 4-whld 2-ton trailers attributed to Brockhouse in the Equipment Regulations of 1964 that lists the census codes of all vehicles. So is it post 1964? I can't quite read the Census Code 3075-3??5 is there a FV number? 2 ton is the load the trailer can carry. So 2 tons & 3480 kg approximate pretty well to 5.5 tons.
  19. My understanding is that red over blue like that is RA RHQ, (batteries are blue with a red square 1/4 the size of the badge in any of the four corners) Any tac signs for the RA were a letter or two & if "2" was used identified a second in command. Postwar "45" indicates Div Loc Bty for a TA unit
  20. They're here: http://s144.photobucket.com/albums/r183/plainmilitary/Plain%20Military%20wrecks/?start=20
  21. Tony excellent that you have recorded the numbers. About half of them were struck off 1967-69 then recovered in 1972 & in 1973 made into Mk2. About a quarter of them have appeared in books official & unofficial. You have probably spotted this coming but are there pictures of them all?
  22. Dare one ask how many are marked up as US vehicles pretending they took part in D-Day?
  23. Yes its better that they die in action rather than the hot spanner of a scrapyard. Even if they were all saved I doubt if there are 1,700 enthusiasts who would each want a pig. I have two & even if each Pig enthusiast did the same still there would be too many to go round. Although I don't see why not! Aiming for a near hit, that's an interesting way of preserving targets. So if you hit the target then you have missed! Yes that would be great to have a list of pigs & a good bit of common sense recording it all.
  24. Tony, that's fascinating but heartbreaking. I used go Johns scrapyard up there & strip things off the pigs before they got put out as targets. Presumably the pigs are pretty stripped bare inside now? I see some still had registration plates, the only one I could be certain of reading was 23BK40. On the others I had difficulty being certain of the last two digits. Have you got a record of them or got other views that would cliunch the identity? I do have records of all 1,700 Pigs & listings of pigs I have in photos taken by myself or appeared in books, newsreels etc It's always nice to gather as much info as poss even if it is a rather pathetic end of life on the plain. Thanks.
  25. Yup that was at the RAC Centre Bovington 2001 reunion of the Para Sqn RAC 25 years after disbandment. There was a group photo later with Gen Sir Mike Jakson sat in front of the Hornet.
