  1. Hi Folks Good luck with the restoration of the gun tractor. Very few of the radiators had the Scammell name cast into them, the majority were cast plain. I've got a 1941 Gun Tractor and a 1945 Recovery and neither have the name cast in the radiator. I've also checked several nuseum and other restored Pioneers and have only seen 2 with the name cast into the radiator. It was not common practise during the war as the mould had to be handled with a lot more and time was of the essence. I have the main beam and lifting chain hoist if you want to have a look at them. I took them out of my Gun Tractor as I use the back for sleeping in. I hope this helps. Brian Carter Sussex
  2. If this is the one from Bob Lamas's sale, I went and had a good crawl over before the auction. It's in reasonable nick and is not a bad restoration project. I was tempted by have 2 Pioneers already and too many projects for the time in the near future. If you need any advice, I probably broken most things on a Pioneer in the 35 years I've played with one. Can possibly point you in the dorection of a few parts if you get stuck. I know we should not advertise things here but the Scammell Register has access to manuals and spares for these beasties. One of the committee has a derelict Pioneer whixh is being used for spares although I'm sure you need too much. I wish you every success with the restoration. Brian C AKA Dewrance.
  3. Hi Folks Don't know if this helps but both of my Pioneers have been rewired as 24V. One has a CAV alternator fitted and the other has a 24V lucas dynamo fitted. Belived it or not, Butec have taken over the old Lucas Alternator and starter business and still make 24V dynamos and starter motors for Gardner 6LW's. If any of you get chance to go the the Commercial Vehicle show in April at the NEC they are usually there. If you apply online, it is free to go to the Show. As a side, the Scammell Register will be at the show. All the best. Brian C AKA Dewrance.:red:
  4. Hi I run 2 Pioneers and rewired the lights. Some left the factory without dip switches and convoy lights only so the diagram is wrong for these as well. If you do not have a dip switch fitted, they are a Lucas one with the horn button integrated and mounted on the left had side of the searing column. The wiring either runs up a tube n the side of the steering column or inside the column depending on when they were built. What year is your Pioneer? Good luck Brian C
  5. Absolutely Brilliant. I always loved seeing the Scammells working. Interesting the number of Crusaders in the background. well done. Brian C AKA Dewrance.
  6. Having regular updates (I'm Arthur's Cousin) and had the vehicle visit my yard a couple of times, I'd say he is doing brilliantly. With a little help from his friends and his young son then I'd say it is going to be a brilliant vehicle. Make's my Scammell look like a toy!. Keep up the good work Arthur. Dewrance A few Scammells, land Rover and wife!
  7. Hello Everybody Many people who have been rallying in the South of England will need no introduction to me. I am Brian Carter and I drive a Scammell Pioneer SV/2S recovery vehicle that is painted in civilian Green. It's been in these colours since I forst painted her in the winter of 1977/78. She has the name of Dewrance and has been featured in several magazines as well as on the telly in the 35 years since I first became involved with her as s teenager. My wife and I bought the lorry in 1987 just after the big storm and have since added a Scammell Pioneer R100, Ex-military Series 3 LWD FFR Land Rover, A towed Scammell Fire Pump and a couple of Scammell wheelbarrow fire pumps. Christine, my wife, drives the R100 and also the recovery one when necessary. If you see us at the shows, come and say hello. Brian C AKA Dewrance
  8. The Diamond T in question is only part way through restoration and has been done in an open field. I encouraged the owner to get it running and out on the road as I have seen so many restorations stall through lack of interest. This one works, is legal and pulls well. we used it to pull a stores trailer from the Ardingly Vintage and Classic Vehicle show which was it's first outing. The vehicle was not used by Wynns but Arthur was given permission by John Wynn to put in their colours and he even gave the guy the correct fleet number for their Diamond T recovery. As has been mentioned elsewhere, the body has yet to be delivered. The rest of the recover gear is awaiting fiment hence why only part of it and the wooden body. Below the wooden body is some ballast weights to keep the backside down. Considering the conditons and limited resources available for this restoration I think we should all compliment the owner and encourage him to finish it off.
  9. Hi Folks I've over 30 years of experience using Scammells and Land Rovers for recovery and towing. Always assume the others are idiots and make sure that you are in command and the casualty know it. If in doubt, leave them there until they are ready to do it your way. Remember, we are playing with our toys and our hobby. If they want a professional recovery, let them pay the bill! Please remember, if the site is open to the public, the Road Traffic Act applies and this includes towing! Time and patience are the best 2 tools in the recovery handbook. REME have issued some excellent guides on recovery techniques and these can normally be sourced throught the ex-military manual sellers. The WW2 era training films on Recovery are a very good start for the ehavier stuff and the principles work equally well for smaller equipment. I trust this helps. Kind regards Brian Carter AKA Dewrance,
  10. Hi Folks This is definately a cammell Pioneer of WW2 vintage. From the shape of teh air cleaner, she is probably the later part of the war from 1943 onwards. Looks in remarkably good condition. Kind regards Brian Carter AKA Dewrance.
