  1. The Afcent headquarters were an old coalmine before. The entrance i mean is at the north side, near the afcent hospital. Opposite there is the "schutterspark" a leisure area with ponds, playgrounds and animals etc.
  2. Hi Chris, thanks for the info. In Schinnen at the US-base you mean? This Citroens were photographed on the mine terrain opposite the Afcent entrance. There is a US military vehicle depot now. I live in Kerkrade a bit to the east of Brunssum and there we didn't see RC vehicles. AFC we did see as the personel used to rent houses all over the region. P.S. were the radio vehicles in the Maastrich barracks also RC? A+ Fer
  3. I seems to have been scrapped in 2010...? A shame but it seemed to have suffered a lot by being exposed outside there near the sea at Audighen.
  4. Yes, a friend of mine in France had one of those still in use in the 80s for his vegetable farm. They had a lot of electronics under the bonnet to operate the obligatory tachograph...
  5. Well 55 and 23 had the same cab body. 55 is a lot bigger and had 10 wheel nuts,.This is a 23 since 1953 they had this body, technically it didn't change much. For size see the mercedes next to it. Thanks for the lincense plate info. We did only see the AFC cars around here in the region. The Afcent base is 8 kms from here. The base vehicles were used very locally i think. Later as they opened the militairy vehicle depot here in town we did see a lot of american trucks and MP vehicles but they all had US-plates.
  6. The British army did have several Citroen U23 trucks at the Afcent headquarters in the Netherlands. Normally Afcent vehicles had a licenseplate with AFC and a number. So what is this?
  7. It looks good to me. My 1925 citroens wings were in the same condition, one had 4 repairs on top of each other. Every one larger than the previous one...;-) I had to do 2 weeks of welding to get it right.
  8. On the first truck it says presented by the royal automobile club london....the rest is to small.
  9. Looks good, a shame the license plate is not very visible.
  10. I did find this picture of a wreck on an other forum. They say It is in John Belfield's collection at Narre Warren.
  11. I don't think they would make a big problem of it that the truck was an ex-fuel transporter at that time. It could be that he delivered water to remote houses. Send a mail to the "mairie" of Appeville. See if they know something about Mr. Mertens. It's a very smal village. P.s. the name Mertens shows up in the regions phoneguide.
  12. The terrapin with the P registration is on the Middelburg market square. Last year they released a new movie on the battle of the Schelde
  13. Nice model, I did some research in the Zeeland archives and found some pictures. They are from the liberation off the island of Walcheren. At the battle of the Schelde.
  14. The bridge over the Rhine was in use till 1953. Later my uncle was ordered to Zeeland. A lot of dikes were damaged by the battle for the Schelde river. He said they used a lot of DUKWs and Terrapins. I have never heard of the last though. I am not shure if the the RE helped in the rebuild too?
  15. Looks like it. Mertens is Belgian/Dutch name indeed. But in the north of france in the region of Flandres they have also lots of dutch names. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Flanders
  16. With the Volvo i did heat it up, put the puller on under tension, spayed it with Imal oil and left it over night. Next day a bit more tension and gave a wack with the hammer and it jumped loose with a bang. On the cone you could see the penetrating oil did only creep half way in the bearing.
  17. Can anyone read the town were Mr Mertens delivered water? Nice pics.
  18. Thanks, nice pics, there was story of an other bridge near Rees (germany) several kms west of the Wesel bridge. But i think that was build a lot later. Im Belgium there have been several Bailey bridges over canals that were still in use in the late 80s. One was in bad condtion. Several diagonal bars under the road deck were broken. And lots of rust would fall on your head if a car passed over it. 😉
  19. By coïncidence i heard that my uncle was detached by the dutch army to the REME for helping building a bridge over the Rhine near Wesel. I was a very long Bailey bridge. That was build in 45/46 and stayed in use till 1953. Here some pics.
