  1. Hi Gary, Seems your service provider wont accept my email! I'll try again in a couple of days. Peter
  2. Hi Gary, The operating instructions for my Coles Mk 3 as found inside the lid of the box are: 1. The compass consists from the top of: (a) Verticle pointer (gnomen) (b) The shadow pointer. © The compass plate. (d)The date slider. 2.Clamp compass on car with compass plate reading zero in line of progression of the car. 3. Set the plate parallel to the ground. 4. Set slider on the appropriate date and note the equation of time. 5. Set watch at true local sun time by adding or subtracting longitude correction and equation of time. 6. Set compass plate on bearing reqired. 7. Set shadow pointer to the watch time on the curve for the right lattitude (reset every 15 minutes or less) 8. Steer the car so that the shadow of the gnomen falls on the shadow pointer. Please note however it is only designed to be used up to 39 degrees north.I have photos but not sure how to put them on this message. If you have an email address I could send them. Hope this helps. Peter Herrett
  3. Thanks for all that. Much appreciated. Peter Herrett
  4. Hi All, Now that the Museum of Army Transport is closed where is it possible to get the authentication/history of an ex military vehicle? In my case it's a Land Rover 1/4 ton GS FV18001 37BP23. Chassis no. 57100350 Thanks in advance Peter Herrett
  5. Hi All, Based on my knowledge of Libya in the 60's it's fair to say that all WW2 debri was cleaned out by the scrap metal trade so theres little chance they are from that era. However the Libyan Army still operated them at that time and allied to the fact that they are near an Army camp you can be pretty sure they're ex Libyan. Cheers. Peter Herrett
  6. Thanks all for your help and advice. Having now got a pic of the data plate it turns out to be a 1/4 ton, cargo, CL, 4x4, Rover Mk.3 FV18001. Pity it's not SAS but very nice all the same, I'll go for it. Peter Herrett
  7. Hi All, Many thanks for all the above info which is very useful. I should add I live in Thailand ( which means getting info is not easy) and the vehicle I'm looking at (or rather the photos I'm looking at) has been rebuilt as a station wagon with no cbvious miltary clues left except it does have the spring loaded lever type tow hook which was used at the time. Can anyone come up with applicable chassis nos. and any chance of a photo of a data plate or at least a description and would that include the Army reg, no, ? When I get this I'll go and give it a good looking over. Who knows it may be genuine it's going cheap and is in really good condition. Thanks gain. Peter Herrett
  8. Hi All, Grateful for any help to authenticate this vehicle I've been offered. I've not yet had the opportunity to view it as it's some distance away and I'd like to be more confident before I take the trouble. It's been rebuilt as a hardtop and theres no obvious military clues left judging from photos. Description is: Land Rover Series One SAS Cargo FV 110001, Chassis no, 57100350. 1955 Specifically I'd like to know if the FV no. and chassis no.is applicable to the SAS Series one (I can find no reference to it) Thanks in advance, Peter Herrett
