  1. Re my post of 29/12/22- I have been persevering with this ‘brand new carb’ for my 3HW. I have sent it back to ‘Burlens Fuel Systems’ twice and the leak at least when the fuel taps are just turned on is now cured. But now I have black smoke blowing from the exhaust when giving the bike any throttle. It looks like I will be having to check the carb has the correct jets, needle setting etc. Not something that I would of expected from a new carb supplied specifically for a WD3HW. Ron P was right when he said he had to check the internals of a new carb he fitted, but my opinion is that when you lay out £460 for a carb it should be at least assembled correctly and with the correct jets, needle setting etc. I will post progress on this ‘NEW’ carb as the saga continues. The maintenance book states NIL clearance on the valves, we have set them at 2 thou (don’t like nil clearances) Opion especially from Ron P please..? Rings and bore are okay. Any other ideas of the cause of black smoke..? Chris M
  2. I need some advise..I have just purchased a new ‘Amal 276’ correct carb for my 3HW from a well known source not a considerable investment. I know that the old carbs leak a bit especially when tickled but this new one to my surprise drips constantly from the bottom of the carb body. I also do not appear to be getting any fuel on the spark plug and the bike will not start. Refurbished mag/ Dino and a excellent spark, all gaskets in place and connections firm and tightened ( it’s brand new they should ) I have other bikes that drip from the carbs when going through the starting process but have always put this down to their age wear and tear. Is the leaking prior to starting, a built in factor for some reason or another…? Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated. Thanks Never having had a brand new carb before I
  3. Can I check which spark plug for the 3HW…? I thought ‘Champion L82C’ but it is being struck by the piston. Thanks Chris

  8. Has anyone got any hints or tips on how the hell you get the clutch rubbers to fit back into the clutch basket a more fiddly job I struggle to think of. Never done it before took the cover off whilst there to check the condition of the rubbers wish I hadn’t, is there a knack to getting them back that’s eluding me..?? Thanks Chris

  10. I have posted this question on the motorcycle forum but thought it was worth a try here as well. My early 1942 Ariel motorcycle has a white '67' on a red square background. I cannot seem to find what this designates might be infantry...but don't know. Can anyone tell me what it means...? Thanks Chris
  11. My Ariel has a white '67' on a square red background on the tank. I cannot find what this designates maybe infantry..? But exactly what I don't know. Can anyone help. Thanks chris
  12. Hello Ron, Excellent...that will do me, I'll go with that...! I'll look for that extra info in their next edition. Have a good evening. Thanks Chris
  13. Can anyone help me with working out a appropriate tank number for my Triumph 3 SW/HW. The bike is early SW frame with the number 'TL 9284' around the top of the headstock and has a later 3HW engine '3HW 52767'. The engine according to 'Orchard and Maddens' book seems to fall into contract number 'S2956' 5000 machines Dec 43 to June 44. No problem there, could have been a military exchange or at anytime replaced in the past 70 odd years, either way not bothered as better than the earlier side valve. I am copying the bike on page '189 or 137' of said book depending which version you have. I would like to put a C number on the tank that roughly corresponds with the frame number but it would appear that this is in the period either before or after the the Triumph factory was bombed and records etc were lost. I think I am about right in placing the frame at around contract number C4631/C5108 but I am no expert at this dating especially with the difficulty with all the record gaps during this period. A question I do have is....the numbers of machines produced from C2073 ( 1st Contract 3SW) to C5108 do not appear to add up to the number on my frame or is this not how it worked...? Any suggestions, confirmations of of my findings or just a ; "Get on with it and stick any number from that time period on the tank" Will be greatly appreciated......." HAPPY NEEW YEAR...!! Chris
  14. Has anyone out there got ONE....lying around that they want to sell...? thanks Chris

  16. I am thinking of selling my above trailer MK2 that's the slightly longer version than the MK1.. can anyone give me an idea of a fair price I should be asking. It's all complete good solid condition with a canvass, tow hook, convoy light etc... needs new tyres. Thanks chris

  19. Hello Andrew, I thought this was my mates jeep when I first saw it but its not. his Jeep is a excellent RAF blue as well I can ask him what the mix was but I know the suppliers were 'Automotive Paint Supplies' in Adershot, Surrey: . 01252 313141.. They can literally mix any colour you want, recently they duplicated a earth brown on one of my bikes, which whilst not the usually, turd colour, is a really nice version and I wanted to keep it. They said it caused them a few problems but have exactly copied the colour for me. As a footnote....I am with you on this subject of vehicle colours Andrew, these people who think that there was a exact colour of green or that WW2 bikes were not ever painted sand yellow etc etc do begin to erc me sometimes. If the colour is a shade that looks good and it suits you and your machine then that's good enough. My old Dad, Royal Artillery, Italy WW2 said that any paint they could get their hands on was used slapped on with a brush and if that was not quit right they would throw dust at it whilst wet....ummm…! I might even give it a go, that'll get the purest at my next show, that's if we ever have another one. All the best Chris M
  20. Hello Martin, So far as I am aware the 'Royal Enfield Co' should have oil in the primary casing where your clutch is, if not this explains why I have been trying to stop the oil I put into the casing of my Enfield from pouring out past one of the most initially impressive thick rubber which turns out to be one of the most useless seals 🤬 devised by man . It sits in the lid and goes around the backplate despite using sealers, extra bands of rubber cut from inner tubes, checking the cover for dents etc etc. May I use this question to ask if anyone has a sure fire way of sealing these casings...? ? Hope this helps Chris M (and me)
  21. Who would be the best supplier of a new Amal 276 pre monobloc carb set up ready to fit a WD M20. So far I know of Surrey Cycles and Hitchcocks has anyone had a new carb from these two suppliers or know of another reliable seller..? Thanks Chris
