Italy to ban all Nazi symbols

Isn't it strange that politicians want to ban something Nazi, that in the minds of most people is something consigned to history as a symbol representing the evil that killed 25 million people but not something upper most in peoples minds.

Meanwhile the hammer and sickle is OK even though under such a symbol approximately 32 million died in China under Chairman Mao's rule and perhaps another 25 million dead under the Soviet Lenin and Stalin. Mein Kampf is bad Chairman Mao's little red book is OK! Fascism is somehow evil and Communism is somehow 'heroic' but IMHO I cannot see much difference!

Perhaps these types of politicians who want to ban Nazi stuff are the ones who want to ban anti-personnel land mines and yet allow shed loads of AK-47s and the like to get shipped all over the world!

fully agree, total pointless interfering hogwash...the government are making it a symbol of today again...they are typical of the idiocy of those who come into government today, they have petty pointless ideas that really mean little or nothing to real people...

Yes , however you have used the word Communism , I believe in the same context Hitler always used the words Jewish Bolshevism and that is where the difference you seek lies.

Before it was taken over by the Natzi party historicaly it was a symbol for good. I wonder if they have taken that into account.

Tha swastika embelishment on equipment etc. - Indo-European source for "good luck"

btw. Natzi / Nazi , National Socialists would never use this derogatory term , without going to the nth of explanation - a rough translation is 'country bumpkin'..

I think this type of ban stems from the fear that countries such as Germany, Japan and so on have, that their history may repeat itself if not kept under tight check.

This is something that we (by which I mean British people) will never truly understand as we do not carry that fear in our national psyche.

that's what I thought at first too, but at 2nd glance, is the 2nd coming of Hitler/Mussolini really the most worrying possible future development for the European populace or Italian government? I can think of a few far more dangerous outcomes.

I think what it comes down to is Italy simply putting forth a politically correct front to protect it's Tourist Industry, the so-called " service industry" , employs 3 out of 4 people, and having people selling Nazi symbols on the beach is not helpful. As someone pointed out earlier, it's an interesting contradiction from all the "Soviet Union nostalgia" you see for sale in greater parts of Eastern Europe and Russia.

At any rate, I don't see Italian police kicking down doors and raiding private collections like they do in Germany. Folks will just need to remain discreet with their stuff , which is typical anyway. Most collectors are caught in this interesting paradox where they want to share their collection with the world but rightfully fear a backlash / unfair judgement of being " Nazi revisionists/revivalists" , when in fact this element is a tiny minority IMO.

Presumably in Italy a ban on Nazi symbols will be distinct from a ban on Mussolini era Italian Fasist symbols? And what about books and articles on the web; will there be a blob painted over every photogragh where such symbols are shown?

Some say that in the UK we are less offended by nazi symbols, as we were never invaded, and yet its not against the law to wear a Nazi uniform in Poland, especially when re-enacting!

the talk of bans are something we are going to see more of, if you keep up with your current politics you will be aware that the far right is making a big come back in Germany and several other countries, and the proposed bans are aimed at them, I'm sure you guys won't want to see the Nazi flag and associated regalia being waved here by a load of guys making Nazi salutes in our streets. our little military vehicle hobby might have to just cover some things up. and any way on a personal level I hate to see people strutting around in SS uniforms etc at show etc. so ban it on public. it won't affect my German vehicles.
