Old Runflat tires replacement. Do you keep the rubber hoop? Beadlocks?

After replacing the dunlop trak grips on my ferret ive discovered that the rubber runflat hoop is too narrow to work with new tires (michelin zxl 255/100r16)

 

Does anyone have a tire (900-16) that has the same bead thickness as the old ones?

 

Have most people just left the hoop out and surrendered the funflat capability?

 

Has anyone done a modern beadlock system to retain the runflat capabilities?

The insert is only part of the runflat system on the Ferret. The real workhorse of the system is the original tire sidewall that is so thick it can hold up the wheel, even when flat. All the insert does is hold the bead against the rim without air pressure so it doesn't pull of while driving flat.

 

Just keeping the rubber ring in there and using a standard tire does not get you a runflat tire for the Ferret.

Remove the runflat insert, use the correct size inner tube. You will also need a rim band, there are rim bands and rim bands, the correct rim band is thickened where the tube valve protrudes through it, since the cutout in a Ferret rim is quite wide and long.

 

The thickening supports the tube valve stem.

The only way to make your chosen tyres (Michelin?) with a runflat capability is not a beadlock on its own as that will be useless, but to have a Hutchinson runflat insert put inside the tyre. We had these on the CVR(W) Fox armoured car when they changed over from Dunlop Trackgrip RF to Michelin which was basically a normal truck tyre. The insert is like a thick rubber ring that is inflatable, it will hold the tyre in shape if punctured, ie bullet hole and allow the vehicle to be moved to a safe area to deal with the wheel. It is also a beadlock in itself. The Fox had 1100-20 tyres, no idea if the inserts are available for 900-16 but worth investigating if you wish to go that way.

Ok thanks for the info guys. I thought the sidewall of the michelin xzl would also be thick enough to support the ferret if the bead was held in place.

 

there is a company that does polymer inserts for most rim sizes which would work as long as its a tubeless tyre.

has anyone done a tubeless conversion to a split rim like the ferret?

I assume it would be possible by using a sealant between the rim halves and sealing the stem hole and fitting a valve to the rim?
