Last go! You have been to the railway museum, Clive, in Swindon and seen Class 4073 Caerphilly Castle and photoed a worn wheel on it. It was a famous Castle in its day during the 50s. I don't 'do' trains but I can sleuth or guess reasonably well though I'm probably miles off on the wrong side of Offa's Dyke on this one! :-D

A good bit of ingenuity, but not quite on the right lines(sorry) Lizzie. Not that particular castle but famous enough.

Further clue, this particular thing was used/damaged by 8 RTR in 1956

Its cast steel so its probably armour of some sort

Given the castle references a turret?

1956 suggests it was involved in the Suez operation.

Its a photo of a steel section that has been cut/machined through its thickness to show stress fractures so a gun mantlet that has been hit by an AP round?

Nope but good thinking turret/castle

Not Suez, but BAOR

Steel yes but not cut through & not a mantlet, a bit more mundane

In 1956 8 RTR were in Barker Barracks, Paderborn. Were they involved in trials with the Caernarvon or Conway tanks? If so, was there an issue with the overall strength of steel somewhere in the construction?

10 68

Yes well done Fred!

BAOR

Caernarvon!

Yes one of several issues with steel components. It was showing "Extensive cracking of the right hand main brake drum"
