The MW I sold on last year was wired up to a conventional trailer socket hidden under the back board and with a clever demountable hitch that fitted on to the original towing bracketry. Alas, I have no photos, but it can be done anyhow. Safety cable? Well you need a secondary method of attachment should the ball hitch fail, usually accomplished by a simple cable between the trailer and an eye on the chassis or towing bar inboard of the ball. Unless you are towing a trailer that has brakes?? I was just towing a motorcycle trailer although I understand the PO trailed a caravan, which must have made for slow progress on an MW!

Depends on A your licence, B weight of trailer. Some of the trailers under 750kg mass don't have to have brakes, so a secondary attachment is very wise. If you have a trailer entitlement, override braked trailers now most have a secondary cable from brakes attached. Ensure it is good condition and the link is sound. I have room to strap around the tow hitch on mine as my trailers are eyes. If you have a period trailer it can become a bit more fraught, though the hitches them selves being eye rings have a positive lock over the eye. Do make sure that if you have a fixed hook the pintle on the trailer can rotate, and vicea versus. The Standard MW was a fixed hook, so must have a rotating pintle trailer. 50 mm ball hitches have built in rotation to the hitch were required. Do you have a specific trailer in mind and what sort of hitch does it have?

Buried at the back of my mind is that a "breakaway" cable arrangement that applies the trailer brakes if a separation occurs is required on trailers with over-run brakes manufactured after 1956. Naturally, I can't remember where I found that bit of information!
