Hi,

The hardtop you picture is not from an '86 vehicle but of the much later Tithonus and Wolf type from what I can tell from the pic you've posted. That aside, the sleeve is indeed for antenna and other associated FFR services as fitted to those tops for 8m and 12m mast operations. In my experience, I never came across '86 hardtop FFR's with them fitted and on one of the units I served in that era we had two which I drove regularly. Your vehicle of course may have had a life upgrade.

Regards

Bob

You are correct regarding the upgrade, sorry if I have confused the issue, I do have a MERLIN report telling me what units it was attached to.

From your comments I am assuming that there may be a series of masts fed through the sleeves.

Sorry if I am seeming thick

Sorry to trouble you, just looked on EBay, would this be the kind of thing?

Richard,

It's no trouble, the mast your depict is a 5.4m, normally associated with infantry PRC352 man pack use at section and platoon level. FFR's in the main use the big 8m & 12m masts as already said, remoted from the vehicle (but sometimes attached with specialist fitting and associated with higher formations). These masts were made by Racal (8m & 12m) and Clark (12m) and still are supplied to MOD by the latter. There is shed loads of pics on the net of these so have a search and enjoy. They are available ex service from the usual suspects and gleebay and fetch anything from £200 - £500+ but you have to be careful. You ideally need the earlier Racal and Clark for your vehicles period. The masts support the antennas, giving extended range in simple terms, the feeders from which go through the sleeves to the vehicle radio sets, VHF & HF.

Bob

Hi Richard,

What is it you want to achieve? Do you have a radio fit in your vehicle? If so is it VHF or HF? Are you after wing mounted TUAAM (VHF) antennas, antennas to go vehicle side candlesticks (HF) or on 8 & 12m masts (VHF or HF)?

some pics of your wagon may help.

Sorry but you need to be more specific.

More than willing to help if you can clarify.

Regards

Bob

PS: aerial [sic] goes in washing machines, antennas on vehicles and masts (an old RSI adage).

Many thanks, yup spotted the spelling mistake, all looking for is externally to have the static mast, I have the wing boxes and candle sticks, I do not have the intention to fit a radio internally, I just would like at this point to have it appearing as FFR when as a static display

Hi, sorry to jump on an old thread, while i was serving we never had these access panels on our FFRs, but i would guess that any Antenna Coaxial cables or the remote cable (Don10) would be run through these, Coaxial cable is of the Armoured Variety and quite stiff and Thick (fnar fnar) what unit was your vehicle with? might give an idea of the type of mast "typically" associated with the vehicle? @ 30 Sig Regt we only had Clark 12m which were ideally located away from the vehicle, but we often bungeed ours to the side because we were lazy pmsl, this wa before the clamps were brought in, altough i do remember the R.E.M.E LAD (Light Aid Attachment) cutting and welding some Mast Base plates to the rear bumperettes and fabricating some Clamps Half way up the Rear body.
