Hi,

As already stated TM 9-801 covers all basic operation, maintenance and repairs

If you are likely to do any more in-depth mechanical work it would also be worth considering the following:

TM 9-1801 'Power train, chassis and bodies'

and TM 9-1802A 'Power plant for 2 1/2 ton...'

If you are interested in the historical aspect of the truck especially with regard to accurate restoration the following are very good:

"GMC CCKW-352/353" (mixed French/German text) by Becker and Dentzer (very rare book but worth watching out for)

"The GMC CCKW Truck in U.S. Service" by David Doyle ISBN 978-0-89747-724-6

"GMC Un Camion de Legende" (French text) by Jean-Michel Boniface ISBN 2-7268-9323-6 (nb. this is a revision of their original English-language book "The GMC 6x6 and DUKW a Universal Truck" ISBN 0-85429-860-6 which has been out of print for a long time but copies occasionally come up for sale)

Regards - MG

As an aside I'd recommend doing a Google search ( other search engines are available ) for anyone needing manuals , I'd certainly do this before splashing out heard earned cash , often considerable amounts of hard earned cash , for manuals that may be in the public domain and freely available online.

If you have an American vehicle chances are good that there are manuals out there, occasionally it'll help if you know what you are looking for and in this respect its worth finding a copy of FM21-6 which is a list of publications for training - this gives you lists of Field Manuals, Tech Manuals, Tech Bulletins etc ., FM21-6 in various publication dates can be found online as simply as typing ' FM21-6 ' in to Google search .

The TM9-801 is pretty useless for repairs. It covers OPERATION and MAINTENANCE. And by maintenance that really only covers 'is it broke? Get a new one'.

In early 43 the echelon system of maintenance was in full effect and the TM9 was stripped of any useful workshop info except daily/weekly/monthly service Checks.

The March 43 TM10-1563 would be the last (well, there is an addendum to cover the fuel/water trucks) would be the one to get.

If you stick with the 44/45 TM9 series you're gonna need AT LEAST FOUR books:

TM9-801 Operation and Maintenance

TM9-1801, Ordnance Maintenance Power Train, Chassis, and Bodies

TM9-1802A Engine and Powerplant maintenance (this will also have DUKW info... so bonus?)

SNL-G-508 Supply Catalog/Parts book.

If you are going to rebuild the 270 you'll want TB9-1802A Fits and Tolerances.

You can find PDF versions online for cheap. Most of them are online at http://www.tm9-801.com

I say the TM10s are a better book, plus you only need 2: TM10-1563 Maintenance and TM10-1562 Parts

Thank you very much

I have indeed found that the TM9-801 is all about maintenance and not really repairs thank you for the info.
