can anyone tell me please what this 50Cal mount is off.

Recommended Posts

While chasing a stash of WW2 jeeps we found some big boxes hidden in the undergrowth, very carefully opening one due to the change of a deadly snake asleep inside we found this gun mount for some vehicle but no other clues except that it was made in 1959 by the packing slip which was still inside its envelope which said it was a CL/MG 229A 50calAA MG L1A1

I was able to get four out and on the trailer with the help of a near by crane. Dose any one know what its off please.

Please note this is in another heading to get as many to see it.

TBH, form your pics. I cant see any mounting attachment points clearly enough to determine a model of Mounting.

If they have BALL accepting 'cup' mounts under the traversing ring. They LOOK as if they might be ring mounts for Cupola's on Truck cabs in British Service. Possibly from the sixties Etc?

The L1A1 .50" Was a designation for the In Service .50" Cal HMG for them. They had shorter barrels as they had been cut down. Simply to clear the rear comm's shelter bodies in a 360 degrees traverse. On Austin K9's, Humber 1 ton radio Trucks & the like.

Difficult to say for sure. but if they have those 'cups' underneath, they SHOULD match with the 'Ball' knobs on the Cupola rings on softskin trucks from that era.

Thank you, they do have three ball mounts on the bottom ring, I was hoping for it to be from some other vehicle so I could get back a bit of cash to cover the costs as I dont know of any truck collectors out here and the other boxes can stay were they are, thank you.. Ray

This mount looks the same as a number that have been turning up at the swap meet at Corowa Swim-In in NSW for the last 4 years. All un-used. Thought they might have been for the International trucks.

Yep, they're a license built copy of a British post-war mount and were trialled on early Mk 1 ACCOs. To the best of our knowledge, they weren't very successful and most (if not all) were never issued and have shown up in relatively large numbers here as NOS, although they never seem to have the mounting kit, consisting of a number of socketed rods. If yours has those, I'd be interested in buying them for our Mk 1 ACCO, but the mount itself has little value and they usually change hands for around $100.

A word of warning - it has some serious springs in there, if you release the locking pins on the sides, the mount will shoot up with a lot of force (one of our members ended up with a pretty decent blood nose out of it).

Cheers,

Terry
