I have quite a few ammo tins with various numbers on, some green & some brown. Did the colour designate what was in them ? was it different period's of the war or different theatres ? Adrian Barrell Posted July 30, 2015 Share Posted July 30, 2015 Yep, 25 pdr cartridges, 8 to a box, they should have a divider riveted just below the top. Ammo boxes were 'service colour' in reality green or brown, usually the latter. Smoke rounds came in bright green boxes. The letter indicates the original use. B for bombs, C for cartridges, M for mines, P for projectiles etc. Some boxes were used for many different things over time, B166 and M104 in particular. rnixartillery Posted July 30, 2015 Share Posted July 30, 2015 Just to add,blank carts were carried in ammo boxes painted red but not always boxes related to the Artillery pieces, ie I have a 6 pdr blank box which is a B166 (mortar)and a 17 pdr blank box which is a C219 (Bofors).
