Scammell S26

Recommended Posts

Hi All

There is a rather nice Scammell S26 on ebay (Item no.321592740569 )

This has a Rolls Royce Engine in and I thought the Military contract had a Cummins engine?

My question is, am I right and is this a civvy one or did the Military use both?

thanks for any help.

Steve

Steve,

Here is the link to the Ebay advert;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321592740569?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D321592740569%26_rdc%3D1

These vehicles were supplied to the Army with the Perkins Eagle 350, which was an improved design of the Rolls Royce Eagle, Perkins having taken the RR Diesel business over.

regards, Richard

No, as Richard wrote it is an ex Royal Engineers SLDT with a Perkins 350/Fuller 9 speed and has been fitted with larger (Foden?) wheels and tyres to improve the top speed.

The standard engine for civilian S26s was the 14l Cummins 350 which although of similar power output had considerably more usable torque.

Perkins bought rolls royce in 1984 and the trucks a 1985 so the engine could be a rolls

It is a Perkins just like this one at Hamptons from forum member Antar. Don't be fooled by the RR name on the rocker boxes, even the 1988 Roadtrain I drove had RR not Perkins. The bird's nest was almost obligatory on any S26 that stood outside for some time, my 6x4 S26 had one in exactly the same place even though that was a genuine RR 305 as fitted to the Crusaders.
