Visiting Normandy August 2014

Recommended Posts

This august I'll be taking my father to Normady as a birthday present. He was born just a few days after the invasion started and has always been intrestes in war history. I think we'll spend about 4-5 days driving around in the area, but there are so many things to see! :-)

Of course we'll have to visit the beaches, but what are the better museums in the area?

I've been looking thru older threads, but find it hard to narrow down to the top 3 museums.

We'll be going in early august, rather than queing up with th crowd in june!

Any advice anyone?

You and your father will have plenty to look at once you're there. There's a small museum in almost every little village in Normandy, it seems. The coastal area from east to west is not very long and driving around the invasion coast is not very time consuming (unless you go there around June 6). Lots of nice restaurants, small hotels, etc.

There's tons of information found on the internet. Google "travelling in Normanide" and see what comes up.

This for example: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/france/d-day-beaches

(Googled: "traveling around d-day normandie")

Go lycke med resan,

Thank you for the help. I've been using http://www.warmuseums.nl and google to narrow down the museum list.

At the moment I'm thinking of visiting these museums.

Musee Omaha 6 juin 1944 - Saint Laurent sur Mer http://www.musee-memorial-omaha.com

Airborne Museum – Sainte Mere Eglise http://www.airborne-museum.org

Musee du Debarquement – Sainte-marie-du-Mont http://www.utah-beach.com

Musee du Debarquement – Arromanches http://www.normandy1944.com'>http://www.normandy1944.com'>http://www.normandy1944.com

Musee de la Bataille de Normandie – Bayeux http://www.normandiememoire.com

Le grand Bunker Muse de Mur de l’Atlantique – Ouistreham http://www.musee-grand-bunker.com

Memorial Pegasus – Ranville-Benouville http://www.normandy1944.com

Any suggestion on other museums/ places we ought to visit? Should we leave out any of the above?

I thought I'd follow up my original question by saying what a great trip we had! :-)

I must say that the french really doing a great job keeping history alive in the Normandy area. Of course I realize that tourism is a important source of income, but still they take very good care of history.

Our trip went totally without any troble whatsoever. From the take off at oslo/ Gardermoen, to Avis rental, highways and the perfect location of hotel at Sword beach and museums, cemetaries, restaurants and traffic. I like France! Always have, always will!

What made this such a great trip was to see it all. We got to see the areathe fighting was taking part, we saw the airborne operations, the Mulberries, the tanks, the more special equipement. And we got to see the thousands of white marnle stones overlooking the ocean at Omaha beach. We learned a lot, we got to understand more and we will always remember this.

I might post some photos of the trip if anyone wants to see the same photos as everyone else has posted.
