Vehicle regestering

Recommended Posts

Tony,

I do not know what age your Land Rover is, but if it were pre-1972 (I think, give or take a year), it could be exempt Road Tax...........BUT, not if it has a Q plate. These were issued where no proof of year of manufacture was given on registration, or it may have been imported. Way to get a normal age related plate is for the vehicle to be vetted by one of the DVLA approved clubs, such as IMPS or MVT in military circles, for its year of manufacture, etc.

I believe that "Q" plates were issued for "vehicles of indeterminate age and origin" It was frequently used for stolen recovereds or ringed "cut and shut" jobs where the original identity was not traceable. It always used to cause problems getting insurance.

It should also be issued to a vehicle built up from parts but the age-related scheme (which I think started after "Q" plates were introduced) has let many people get away with it. If a Land-rover was built around a replica chassis with a TDi motor, should it really run on an age-related plate ? Technically, it should have had a "Q"

Unfortunately, some owners who didn't do their homework properly ended up with "Q"s as well.

Removal of a "Q" plate once issued will not be easy. "Starting again" might be the easiest option if you want an age-related plate

before the age related tax exemption rules came in I had already registered one of my Ferrets on a "Q" plate as this was in those days a lot simpler form of registration than getting an age related plate.

I have now changed it to an age related registration. Do not try to do this by post you will just end up going round in circles. It is much better to go in person to your local DVLA regional office:

- explain what you want (and that it is a military vehicle and will need someone who is intelligent enough to appreciate that NO it is not the same as a car :x)

- present a letter from one of the approved clubs recognised by the DVLA as able to issue proof of age certificates (ie effectively the MVT or IMPS - you may be charged a small fee by the club for doing this)

- establish if the the local office will require to inspect the vehicle, this may be down at their office (if you currently have valid road tax on your vehicle and can legally drive on the public road) or, as in my case, argue with them until they agree to send a mobile vehicle inspector to your location to do an on site inspection.

- wait for them to post a new tax disc and amended V5 registration document

- all in all fairly simple if you get them in the right mood

I have been up to the museum tonight and spoke to the main man and he has informed me that when the vehicle was passed over to the museum no paperwork came with it. He also told me that non of the vehicles have documents so before we start working on them it looks like a trip to the local DVLA offices may be in order, To be honest I haven't got an problem with the Q plate on the Landrover so cant I just keep it and have a set of mili plates maid up just for show use .

Thanks chaps

Tony

You can keep the "Q" if you want to but when I worked in motor insurance (which was years ago) anything above Third Party only was almost impossible for "Q"s as Insurers always thought they were cobbled together from mismatched parts.

I believe also that they have an effect on certain Traffic Policemen. Some Police Forces have a habit of causing them to be applied to vehicles that they are certain have been stolen but can't trace the previous identity of in order to prove theft. There is sometimes only evidence that the original carrier of a number was so badly damaged (by fire for instance) that the vehicle now in use must be a "ringer" in which case they get "Q"d.

What year does the military registration tie it to ? As Kewelde says, if it's pre-72 ish then you are doing yourself out of free road tax if you keep the "Q".

Typical, AJ is RAF, I'll tell you what to do, it wont cost you a penny, write to the RAF museum at Hendon, ask for info on the reg number telling them what vehicle you have, they'll send you a copy of the record card for that vehicle, it will give the in service date etc etc

I emailed them, they replied asking for my address, in a few days I had the info, just google RAF museum Hendon then hit the contact us button, it's that easy.

sorry I couldn't tell you, but I hope this helps.

Cheers

Ian

I have a Q plated 1983 USAF pickup truck. It is useful to know that Q plate vehicles are MoT'd for visible emissions only. In all other respects they are tested as though they are 1972, regardless of their actual build date. This has implications for all sorts of things like seatbelts, lights, brakes etc. Worth knowing!

Before this ruling was brought in I tried to get an age-related plate but DVLA were not interested. I've never had any trouble with the law regarding the Q plate and I only use specialist insurance companies for my historic vehicles so that's no problem either.

DVLA are not issuing Q plates any more so I suggest you think carefully before changing it.

Hello Mike

I think we are going to stick with the Q plate and just have a set of military plates made up just for shows. I have had a good look around the old girl and eveything seems to be in good condition apart from a suspect our rigger which holds one of the fuel tanks in place. Also it has had a set of ice tyres fitted for some reason :?. They must be changed before we go out on the road or plod will have something to say no doute :nono:.

Thank for your help

Tony

Ps Does anybody want a set of ice tyres? I would sit there and pull the spikes out but I cant be boverd with all that.

About 15 years ago I got a Q plated Pig re-registered on a historic number. That was Bournmouth & at the time the manager was a classic vehicle enthusiast. So whether it was to do when, where or attitude I don't know.

I would go back with a copy of this:- http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/~/media/pdf/leaflets/INF46.ashx

and advise them they were acting illegally, in the nicest possible way of course! It clearly states that a Q plate can be replaced with an age related if you can prove the date of manufacture.

A Q plate is not a major hassle, most specialist insurers will treat them much the same as anything else which is modified / specialist. In the olden days Q plates were dished out for all sorts - kit cars, stolen recovered, imported, re-registered, etc. with not much more than an MOT certificate to prove what was what.

These days there is a bit more to a Q plate, it is used where age cannot be proven or the vehicle is made from a combination of bits of various ages. You can build a kit-car, SVA it and have it on a new age-related plate (EG 2010 reg) IF you use enough NEW parts (engine, gearbox, axles, etc.) but you then let yourself in for it being MOT'd as any other car of that year which means emissions are much stricter, tax bands change at the whim of the government, etc. etc.

Most imports now have to be checked by VOSA and end up on an age-related plate, as do write-offs etc. so Q's are reserved for "proper" kit cars and other bitsas / rebuilds where age is hard to prove or not particularly relevant.

I have had two write-offs re-registered and both came back on age-related plates as they had a VIN number that proved the vehicle's age.

Most insurers should be happy enough that your vehicle is not dodgy and would insure it agreed value (my 109 is with Adrian Flux, loadsa modifications and even agreed value they're very reasonable).

Spent over an hour at Nottingham DVLA this morning on second attempt to get my Diamond off Q plate.

COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. They have now refered the case to DVLA Swansea.I was also told that signing a form V112G was not valid as their interpretation of the exemption for pre 1960 vehicles was(Motor vehicles first used before 1st January 1960 and used unladen before that date).

Now awaiting reply from swansea with the staff at nottingham implying that it would not go in my favour.

Might be quicker to send off the slip stating it has been scrapped, and then start again from scratch to register the vehicle - as purchased from a scrap yard!!

Does make you wonder. Hope you get it sorted at Swansea. If they refuse, I wonder if a few folk on here might be able to provide evidence that they have done it before?

I've not got anything off a Q plate but I have re-registered several scrap vehicles (albeit modern non-military ones), my understanding was, subject to a VIC to confirm it is what you say it is & was made when you say it was, you get issued an age-related plate.

Nothing to stop you doing the "new" registration before you "scrap" the Q plate, in fact it is almost desirable to keep the Q plate as SORN so that if there is ever a problem over identity etc. you can put the Q back on the road and avoid SVA type hassle. Of course, all of that would be against the rules so I'm just being hypotheitcal here.

HOORAY Swansea have upheld my request and granted the Diamond an age related number (495 XUX) and is now classed as historic. Really did not expect them to move so quickly on this matter so am suprised and well pleased .:-)
