Guest matt
Hi All. Sometime during late 2003 or early 2004 the crash site of F5E Lightning 44-24229 on Plynlimon,Mid Wales was attacked by souvenir hunters who used hack saws to remove the supercharger and several smaller parts from the crash site including a wing flap. The removal of these parts was carried out without the permission of the landowner or the MOD. A reward is now being offered for information on the whereabouts of the parts removed. The aircraft crashed On September 11th 1945,the pilot Lt Xenophen E.Eugenedes was killed. The wreckage of the aircraft was left on the crash site and has been regarded for many years as a memorial to the pilot. The crash site is remote, the nearest vehicle access being over two miles away and the weight of the parts removed is considerable, the supercharger alone weighs over 100lbs. obviously those responsible were organised and went equipped. It seems likely that the parts have gone into a private collection, however I would ask anyone who sees any parts which may have come from the Lightning to contact me,the parts on the site have in the past been recorded in detail so they can be easily identified. Thanks, Matt.
Jack
Matt, that isn't very good news. would they have a big resell value or is it purely for someones collection?
Guest matt
Hard to tell Jack, going by the prices some will pay on ebay for "crash relics" they do have a monetary value, but the real value is in the historical context on the crash site. All military aircraft crash sites in the UK are protected under the Protection of Military Remains Act,under the act it is a criminal offence for anyone to tamper with, damage.move, remove or unearth any part of a crashed military aircraft.
