Hi Nick, I got to play with these in the late 70's - early 80's. Sadly, didn't do any recovery work with them ( I drove Explorers and Martians for recovery work), we were acting as a ferry service, moving them from the RA ranges in the Hebrides to 26 Command Workshops in Stirling. You can see from the pics, that as a civvy MOD driver, we were not held to the same dress code as the military!

Regards - David

Apologies for the late reply David, great to see the militants back then 👍🏻

From the BBC News webpages.

This item about an Amphibious Car event on the Thames.

Focused mainly on the Amphicars but a few obvious ex Military vehicles in the background and a DUKW pottering around.

Yesterday early pm southbound M5 north of Worcester, a Crusader pulling a plant semi- trailer loaded with a faded green Explorer and a demountable office/radio body strapped over the rear bogie of the trailer.

The driver seemed to have that satisfied grin only possessed of someone who has just been 'adopted' by a Scammell!

Spotted this nice load on the M25 on Monday afternoon - I presume it was heading back from Mons.

Meanwhile about 7am last Thursday spotted two halftracks on the back of a low loader heading south - think they must have been on the way to Belgium.

A bit late owing to the HMVF refurbishment, but a couple of weeks back there were two Chieftain ARRVs and an MBT on the A31 by the five-legged stag on the Drax estate.  They looked a bit weather beaten, but what interested me was that they were on HETs rather than the now usual Metcalfe Farms transport.
