  1. 100 Militants cut up?? My God, that's nearly the worst scrap story I've ever heard. Did you know that after the war, there were around 200 Stirling bombers cut up at Maghaberry Airfield over here? The site is a prison now. Anyway, thanks for the info, it's always good to have contacts.
  2. It is August 1945,according to chassis number. We hope to at least get it running and mobile "this year..." but I'm sure you know the story yourself! It WILL be saved, I know that much. There is a Matador wreck on same site which may provide brake parts, I'll see how we get on. Problem is they are nowhere near to where I live...we only get a few hours at some weekends.
  3. Thanks for reply, I was thinking of just fitting small air cylinder in place of original hydraulic one. Probably work ok if compressor can keep tank full... :red: The wagon has been sitting in field for 30 odd years but is in reasonable condition apart from cab. Engine turns and transmission should be ok. Owner reckons it did very little mileage when he used it as timber crane. I have never seen an 0854 6x6 at vintage rally here in Ireland, are there many preserved in England? I know the place is full of 0853 Matadors over there. I just heard recently of two that went for scrap, not that far from where I live...so sad.:embarrassed:
  4. Hi there, I would like to hear from anyone who has preserved/restored an AEC 0854 model regarding the hydraulic braking system. Is it possible to get parts for servo motor or can the entire system be converted to full air? Any info is welcome.
  5. Not quite as bad...he's a hoarder! Don't worry,I'm trying!
  6. This poor Morris Commercial had new engine fitted prior to chassis breaking during "enthusiastic" timber winching... The owner dragged it to side of field where it remains to this day!
  7. It's got your name written all over it!! Haha...
  8. Nice wagon and how lucky were you to find it while looking for another one! Like your youtube vids too. Good luck with research and restoration.
  9. Ha, the weary ploughmen with their flagons of cider got them in the long grass...
  10. Bravo! The fact that we can save some old wagons and other machines from the past is really an attempt to cling onto the "good old days" when the sun always shone, you could hear birdsong, flaxen haired maidens walked down country lanes :Dand sooner or later you would hear an AEC or Bedford or Austin...aw, take me back... Oh, plus the fact that they look and sound fabulous compared to the whispering junk that parades our streets nowadays!
  11. What do you mean WILL end up with sheds full? I have a hayshed, a Nissen hut and various small sheds full of stationary engines, tractors, boats and "useful things...":D
  12. I totally agree, your theories are spot on. I display vintage chainsaws and outboard motors at rallies all over Ireland and you would hardly believe some of the tales I've heard concerning old wagons being scrapped rather than sold for preservation, even when the scrap value was less than half of what they were offered by the poor sod trying to save the wagon!(Me...)The last 3 years really hit hard here with the scrap prices sky high, thankfully they are really low now!
  13. I agree totally, there are loads of serviceable bits on this old Matador, thankfully the owner is keeping her for spares in case his "good" Matador gets ill...On another note I tried for years to buy a derelict Track Marshall 55 dozer off a local farmer for TWICE the scrap value but he insisted he was intending to "use" it despite the fact an Ash tree had sprouted between front blade and radiator! It eventually went to the scrapyard...
  14. I know of several Matadors that went for scrap in the last 25 years! The owners simply refused to sell them for restoration! At least now I know of 3 that will NEVER be scrapped...
  15. This is how so many Matadors ended up :embarrassed:At least the owner of this one has kept it for spares to keep his working one going!
