  1. The Elefant has now arrived at Bovington, visit their Facebook page and there's clips of its journey and arrival.
  2. Again thanks for your help guys, I've just been Googling the Austrian Gendarmerie and this does indeed look to be the origins of the helmet!
  3. A pic. of the helmet liner. I couldn't see any obvious stamped markings on it but need to have proper look later on. The badge is attached via two wires soldered on the badges reverse, these going through the shell and folded over inside.
  4. I'll have good squint at it later this week,I do know that it doesn't have the small 'loop' or bracket on the front like the Spanish helmets.
  5. Thanks for your time guys, appreciated!
  6. A friend of mine was recently given this rather distressed and corroded German(?) helmet and we were wondering if anyone could shed any light on its origins and age? It has a canvas chinstrap which I don't think would be correct for a WW2 era helmet although I could be wrong. More obvious is the attached grenadier type motif. Any ideas people?
  7. A friend of mine had a RHD 'Trekmaster' pick up in his yard for a good few years, it had a wooden drop-side body and the cab was pretty flaky. I remember the steering column stalk switches as being from a Morris Marina or such! Pretty sure I've a sales brochure and handbook for one somewhere too.
  8. A fine looking vehicle, always had a soft spot for the RL too, I remember many years ago in the '70s a then local company, Laportes, who mined and processed fullers earth, had a bright yellow RL tanker, whether for fuel or water I don't know. I would often see it caked in mud and dust on the A25 just outside Redhill. Often wonder what happened to it, hope it survived...
  9. Sad news, I read his autobiography 'Wings on My Sleeve' a truly incredible life.
  10. Another fascinating film 'Tali Ihantala 1944 ' From 2007, the film's about the battle of the same name during the Finnish-Soviet Continuation War of 1941-44. Well worth a viewing! Apparently, so I've read, some of the StuG IIIs used in the film were actual veterans of the battle itself.
  11. Another interesting film, this one from 2009. 'Lebanon : The Soldier's Journey' Set during the 1982 Lebanon War, virtually the whole film is viewed from inside an Israeli tank (a Centurion) and you only see what the crew can of what's going on outside of the tank. The film is based on the directors, Samuel Maoz, own experiences as an Israeli conscript during the '82 war. Was busy compiling this (at work )whilst the post above appeared!
  12. Certainly not the best film but certainly worth a watch, 'The Beast' made in 1988 centres on a Soviet T55 during the Soviet-Afghan War that becomes separated from its unit following an attack on a village habouring Mujahideen fighters. A band of the Mujahideen set of in pursuit of the tank seeking revenge. (The tanks used are actually T55s captured by the Israelis and modified to Ti67 configuration)
  13. Again, thank you gentlemen for your help! Alan.
  14. Amongst my fathers pictures of his time in Korea during his National Service I found this picture of some of his friends, the quality is not great but the two outer guys are obviously sporting Brens but I'm not sure about the chap in the centre, a wooden stocked Sten of some model? Any ideas? Alan.
