Guys

As this is the first Series III 109 that I have owned, I can not find what oil I need.

Can anyone help a dumb ass with what really is a simple question??

What is the best oil for the Series III??

Tar very much :?

If you are talking engine oil any good quality 20-50 is what I usually use in my 1964 series 2A.

I find that "Halfords pre 1980 engine oil" works fine i use it in all my
HMV's, and it's very good, i find it's well priced and easy to get hold of.

The official answer (although it may not be the best answer!) is in the Servicing Schedule for Rover 1/4 to 3/4 Ton Army Code No.60957, which says it should be OMD 75. It will need 8 litres if you have an oil cooler or 6.8 litres without the cooler.

OMD 75 is equivalent to SAE 10W/30

There should be a listing of military oils & their equivalents coming soon. Isn't that right Jack? :)

I'm hoping that Clive's quoted 6.8 litres is near enough to my normal rule-of-thumb when changing oil, which is a 5-litre container plus 1 pint from another decanted into my old Castrol can. The Ambulance has survived ten years of my ownership by this method, so I can't be that far out...

Can't beat a good 20/50 although for winter use i prefer a 10/40 especially if you have an oil cooler fitted which keeps the oil much colder than it needs to be at this time of year, especially if used for short runs.
