Project Tithonus Land Rovers loosing their identity?

You have never been allowed to road register an ex military vehicle on it's service plate.

You are issued with an age related plate by the DVLA.

It's military number will live on as the military plate with it's number and model type should still be on the seat box or the dashboard.

You can get show plates made up with the original military number made up at shows.

According to Defence Equipment & Support news August 2007 issue, Project Tithonus is a "mid-life improvment" to currently serving Land-Rover Defenders. A 1986 Land-Rover would be 21 years old when the upgrade programme started, so would not be a viable proposition for upgrade. The AA 11 AA registrations started on 1st Jan 1995, therefore a Land-Rover with a registration ending in AA would have been 12 years old when upgraded therefore in its "mid-life". The project was to extend the overall service life of the Land-Rovers by 10 years, from 20 to 30 years, so it seems strange that they are being disposed of now 3-4 years after they were upgraded.

Hi Robin,

I have just had a look at the Project Tithonus Land-Rover being auctioned on Withams web site, The registration number CH ** AA seems to be a 1996 registration, as Project Tithonus started in 2007, it seems that the in service date of 1986 was entered by mistake.

All Land Rovers that have been through the TITHONUS Life Extension Programme (LEP) are given new Nomenclature ,Nato Stock Number and Asset Code and will therefore require a new Equipment Registration Number for MERLIN.

For instance

TRUCK UTILITY MEDIUM GS CARGO SOFT TOP 12V,4X4,2.5 LTR LAND ROVER 110 DEFENDER

NSN:2320 99 893 7004 ASSET CODE:NB17103103

Following LEP becomes

TRUCK UTILITY MEDIUM GS CARGO SOFT TOP 12V,4X4,2.5 LTR DSL LAND ROVER 110 DEFENDER LEP

NSN:2320 99 908 7417 ASSET CODE:NB17103113

Hope this explains their "new" identities.

Steve sorry cannot agree with this;

Certainly up to 2004 when I got the bullet, it was never practise to re-reg a vehicle due to an assett code change; To double check I was down at RAF Leuchars this morning and was able to check the Landies of 71 Eng regt RE that have been thru the LEP; I checked 3 and all bear their original reg numbers xx K* xx.

As an aside all our Tithonus landies came with faults and were cr*p and immediately VOR'd -one fault was hubs and also wheel nuts too long(deep) for the wheel studs due to extra thickness of wheel rims etc. There is a long list of mods that had to be done. In reality it was all cosmetic and still same underpowered engine under bonnet. Our FFRs run out of puff on a hill, best running them in dark then switch lights off before reaching a hill so they don't see it lol.

Ted ,you're right!

Walked over to DSG B Vehicle Park this afternoon and found several TITHONUS Land Rovers - with registrations ranging from xxKExx to xxKJxx - obviously their original ERNs.

I know that giving the vehicles new Asset Codes and NSNs whilst retaining their original Registrations has caused problems regarding these vehicle's details held on JAMES , the Asset Management System but cannot at present find out whether their Vehicle Histories as held on MERLIN are affected.

Apologies for duff info

Steve.
