chassis plate

this will probably be my only post here but i thought you may appreciate what i found. i found it as a child about 35 years ago can't remember where though.:-( i put it in my drawer,then in the attic.now,all those years later i have cleared my parents attic and 'found' it again.now a little older i can appreciate it's apparent history.could anyone please enlighten me as to what it could have came off and what all the letters/numbers refer to??
does anybody have a picture at all??

I can't quite read the number on the plate but numbers H5469704 - H5470202 were allocated to contract S3039: AEC, tractor, 4x4, AA + PTO for 10KVA generator. In other words the famous AEC Matador.

There will loads of pictures of them on this forum.

If the number starts 548... then that's a bit odd.

WMB Contract probably means War Ministry 'B' Vehicle Contract, but stand to be corrected - B vehicles were softskin vehicles. 'A's are armoured vehicles whereas 'C's are plant and machinery.

AEC Matador used to tow the 5.5" Medium Gun. I think the number starts 648.

Hi Johnny,

I think this is the plate from the side of the rear body of an AEC Matador. W.M.B. is the initials of the body builder, which in this case would likely be Weymann Motor Bodies. A lot of truck chassis's were shipped out to specialists for their bodies.

I believe Park Royal Vehicles might have built cabs for AEC........not absolutely sure this was for Matador in particular.

:-D take a spade,i just kicked it out of the grass/soil. to be honest,it was a small farming village in the middle of nowhere.what's the chances of a farmer,years ago, buying up an old military vehicle??? i suppose he could've done.it might still be there behind a barn..the plate could've simply fallen off...???
